I'm looking to buy my first tv of any real value. I started out by going to Best Buy where I noticed the samsung hlp5085w. I came home to do some research and read reviews on this and others before making any decisions. However, after about a week of visiting websites and reading reviews and specs and whatnot, I think I'm more confused now, with there being so many options out there. The hlp5085 still looks good to me, but there doesnt seem to be many reviews out there, I guess since its still fairly new.

Anyway though, I was hoping some of you could recommend what to get for someone in my position. I would like to get soemthing for around 4k which would be used mostly for tv and video gaming with an occassional movie thrown in. Id like it to be 50"+ and would like to get something whose technology will not be obsolete in 2 years.

What are you waiting for?
The Samsung HLP-5085W in my experience is one of the best 50" DLP I have seen this year, and the price also is within your budget.

Sony makes one with similar features but it's much more expensive and it's not nearly as good looking and elegant as the Samsung.

Did you know that there is more than one moon

As a past owner of a Samsung HLP5063W, HLP4663W, and having a friend that owned the current 61" model, I can say the following about Samsung DLPs:

Pros:
Great color
Excellent contrast/brightness
Great looks
Every input you need
Great GUI
Cheaper than equivalent plasma
Did I mention great color?

Cons:
Ghosting
Rainbow effect
Non-removable screen surface blemishes
Audio synch delay for most media (can be offset with receiver, but it varies according to video source for some reason)
Still expensive for something that needs bulb replacement

Cons:

Ghosting
Ghosting, could be also caused by external reasons.

Rainbow effect
This is a common problem with DLP TVs. Very often a well done wheel allignment, corrects or improves the rainbow effect.

Non-removable screen surface blemishes
What do you mean? Internal Blemishes?

Audio synch delay for most media (can be offset with receiver, but it varies according to video source for some reason)
Are you using an HD set top converter box? Audio delay with HD converters are very common.

Still expensive for something that needs bulb replacement
We all know about the expensive projection bulbs these kind of TV use, but with normal use of the TV set and keep the filter clean, the bulb should last you about 2 years.
Luckly, prices on these bulbs are going down.

thanks for the input guys. so we've come to the conclusion then that the hlp5085w is a good dlp, but should I even be looking at dlp over something else? for around 4 grand, is there anything "better" out there?

Sure, with that kind of money you can also get a decent ED resolution Plasma if that's your wish. I was under the impression that you were only shopping for DLP HDTVs and nothing else. Why don't you read some excellent articles on this website before you make up your mind.

Now, am I good looking, or not!

hey Mr. T, since you obviously know so much more about tv's than i do, let me ask my question this way. If you had 4k to spend on a tv, which would you get and why? furthermore, is there any new technology that is due out in the near future (2-3 month range) that would affect tv's in this price range, and thus your decision?

Flyonn, please read this article about LCOS tecnology written by one of our regarded writer Mr.Clint de Boer at Audioholics.com

http://www.audioholics.com/techtips/specsformats/displays_LCOS_TVs4.html

This technology from Intel was suppose to revolutionize the HDTV industries producing sharper images on high definition Tvs and reducing prices in about half the cost of HDTVs but...............looks like something went wrong somewhere, because Intel has pulled out of the LCOS project.

Please read also:

After finishing reading all of these articles, you might would want to stash your moneies for now and wait until the price of this Sony digital projector goes down and then go for it!

Here are some reviews on the Sony Qualia:

My wife thinks I am good looking, what do you think?

Be very careful of the "less proven" technologies that are currently available. The Samsung is capable of making a very nice picture and, unlike the "ed" plasmas in your price range you will not worry about burn-in or weight. If oyu have the room a good DLP will take down most plasma for picture quality all day long.

Do your self a favor and call a local, capable calibrator. Your set will be dramatically improved. While the Samsung product is capable it is not very good "out of the box".

PS- feel free to contat me for a referral if you are interested in video calibration services.

Help!!

I am in somewhat the "same boat" -- It is confusing to compare all the different plasma TVs from different manufacturers -- Does anyone know of direct "unbiased" comparison reviews on 50" Plasma, LCD, or DLP Monitors from Marantz, Sony, Panasonic, Samsung etc etc???
HELP!

Go Sharp LCD

For four grand you could get this Sharp 37" LCD. IMO a better picture than just about everything out there. You always hear that LCD's don't do blacks as good as Plasmas. Which is true. But is it that big of a difference? Check it out and then decide.

Flyonn, the Sharp that Duffinator mentioned is excellent but this Panasonic is also a great Plasma. I beleive Vancouver was on the same boat as you are with the same amount of confusion on what to choose.

Here is the Panny:

Flip a coin "Head" for Panasonic and "Tail" for Sharp, the only way to clear the confusion out of your mind. :D

My 2 Cents Worth

I am new, but just thought I'd put my 2 cents in. I just got my 5085W over the holidays after a lot of soul searching and checking reviews and visiting chat boards. I had read different things about this unit, but my wife was really taken with the pedestal version, so we went with it. It was about $500 more the "table top version" (5065?) but, funny enough, the Samsung 5065 stand runs...you guessed it...$500, so we figured we broke even. I would have been happy with a "Pani" without DLP, but having got this one, I remembered what a friend told me once: "If you're happy with it, you'll forget what you paid for it." (BTW it was "only" $2400 on line from Digitalkings.com.) And I must say, I could NOT be happier!

I did read one review from a fellow who must have been a real videophile, who paid someone to come out after he received his and for $250 did his videophile thing, adjusting “warmth,” “pin cushion” (whatever that is,) but, honestly, from the time I first fired mine up, I have been mesmerized by how beautiful it looks. I mean I found myself on New Years Day tuning away from the Rose Bowl and watching a program on HDNET called "Sunrise in America" that looked like they just took a camera and planted it in various places like Yosemite and Yellowstone and let it run. I was breathtaking. And I remember thinking to myself, “the Rose Bowl is on and you're watching a nature program?” Yep! It was that amazing!

Anyway, I cannot speak for videophiles, but for the money and the fact that with DLP there is no alignment or burn-in issues, and the fact I was able to get a three-year warrantee that INCLUDES two bulb changes for $350, I figured I could not go wrong. If you're in doubt, do not doubt anymore...go get it! And, by the way, if you’re going to spend this kind of dough, and regardless WHICH set you settle on, you MUST get an HD DVR!

Whether it’s from your cable company or DirecTV/Tivo or DISH Network, a DVR makes the High Definition experience complete. First of all, since there is a limited amount of programming, being able to just go through the listings and click the programs you think look interesting such as HD movies on HDNet (cool IMAX flicks) or HBO or Cinemax or sporting events, you can now watch something spectacular whenever you decide to. And with the new dual DVRs you can record one thing and watch another, or record two things and watch one you’ve already recorded!

Secondly, life is too short to be subject to the pain of commercials and the multiple promos for the latest ESPN or Fox or WB or other network series. You can now run around for the for ½ hour of the program you like (even talk to you wife or girlfriend!) then start it and fast-forward through the commercials (SO important if you are an American Idol fan!). Sorry, this is kind of my personal campaign, but you get the picture, so to speak.

hlp5085w vs. others

R2RO, if you don't mind sharing, where'd you get the $350 extended warranty with 2 bulb changes? We could probably all benefit from the same! Thanks!

out of the box and after being calibrated the Mitsubishi Dlp is hands down the best dlp on the market. I used to sell the Samsung and we had something like 15 open box(defective repairs) on the sales floor. I would venture a rough estimate that about 50 percent of the Samsung Dlp's we sold this year need service within 6 months. They have a good picture but the Mits will outperform it in every aspect. If the glare bothers you on the Mits you can remove the screen which is something a lot of people do. This is a no brainer, the Mits looks better on HD and non-HD hands down.

Mmmm... I've heard this argument about Mitsi vs. Everybody else. Seems MitsiPeople have an undying devotion to that product brand. I've had both a Mits and a Hitachi, and I gave the Mits to my sister. Felt it just didn't stand up with shadowing, poor quality audio, etc.

But, to each his own. I've just wandered in here looking for info on this Samsung model, as the 2005 Consumer Reports rates this one of the highest for overall quality and customer satisfaction. There are no reports on repair costs, and I'll admit Mitsubishi outranks all others for minimal repairs, but do I really care? Mmmm not really, gonna buy an extended warranty whether it be Mitsi or any other brand, so I guess that blows the theory that Mitsi beats this hands down.

I've watched many of the online forums for a while and it sounds to me like the Samsung DLP is a heck of a bargain, and now I'm getting local pricing at $1935 for the unit, plus $350 for three year extended warranty!!! That's at a local store here in Mooresville, NC.

So, for the budget buyer who wants HD ready and good looks along with what appears to be excellent audio/video performance... well, I think I'll pass on the Mitsi, which at this size display runs about $1000 more than the Samsung!

So, Flyonn, what did you end up doing???
