I was looking to get this to replace the 20" turd I'm using now. The only worry I have is with the wobulation issue the previous "1080p" Samsung had. I can't seem to find anything about it, so if any of you guys know, it would be a great help! Thanks!

Here's a <a href=http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Samsung-50-DLP-HDTV-HL-S5087W-/sem/rpsm/context/99001426/oid/148573/catOid/-12867/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do>Link</a>.

Yes, its using the wobulation, but that shouldnt be considered a problem. If you cant even tell by looking at it, it shouldnt be an issue. The reason they use the wobulation is because it is more cost effective. I think it is a great TV and plan on getting the HLS-5087 as well.

So they are still using the 960X1080 chip?

For some reason, I still think that is kind of lame. I've seen the set in person, and compared it directly to the Sony SXRD, side by side. I'll admit that they both looked good, but the fact that the DLP is "cheating" in my mind, kind of turns me off about it.

Neither set (sony or samsung) is capable of accepting a 1080p source, as far as I know. Why would a comparison between the two sets really matter then? Aren't they both cheating while displaying their respective 1080p pictures?

I compared them with a 1080i signal, and honestly they looked very similar. Why aren't they capable of accepting a 1080p signal, and when 1080p does come out, how difficult would it be to upgrade the hardware to make it so it does?

I don't know that much about this stuff and I don't want to end up screwing myself in the end.

Actually, I take that back, CaliHwyPatrol. My bad! It is the sony LCoS that is incapable of accepting a true 1080p signal. Basically, the sony would take a 1080p signal, break it down to 1080i and then deinterlaces it back to 1080p. If you look at the specs sheet for the Sony on Crutchfield's website, you can see that the max input is rated at 1080i through either component or HDMI.

On the other hand, the samsung actually accepts a 1080p signal and maintains that signal in its final display. Here is the spec sheet from Crutchfield for the Samsung . Soooo... The samsung is not cheating.:)

Cool! Thanks for the link! My main concern is still the fact that the Samsung is using a 960x1080 chip. For some reason that bothers me, but is there any merit to my concern? Is the chip just as capable as anything else when it comes to 1080p?

Thanks,

It's using a true 1920 x 1080 DLP chip!:) The other cool thing about it is that it converts all signal sources to 1080p (very cool feature; how it looks is a completely separate issue  ). Long story short, the specs on this tv, imo, are what everyone's been waiting for.

Awesome! That is exactly what I was hoping to hear! Hopefully I'll have one very, very soon! Having a 20" CRT with my sound system is just wrong, and nobody should ever have to suffer that fate. :D

• 2 component video (accepts signals up to 1080p)
Component video can carry a 1080p signal?

EDIT: I think I already knew that. What threw me off is the fact that most devices that output 1080p will only do so through HDMI, and will downscale for component.

Hi, all. I know I know this is an old thread but does anybody else have this TV?

I am very intererested in purchasing the Samsung HL-S5087W. I've done research on this TV for months and I've read endless reviews on this TV.

I can say that about 95% of the reviews I've read about this TV have said great things about the picture quality. My concern is that I've been to numerous electronic stores to check this TV out in person and I was not overly impressed with the picture quality of this TV in person. There was a noticeable "fuzzyness" in the picture especially in the background and I've noticed this at numerous best buys and circuit city. I mentioned this to the best buy rep. and he told me the picture on the TV will look much better in my house once I hook it up directly to my DirecTV box with HDM cables... I believe that but Im wondering how much better it'll be?

So I guess my question is if the picture quality is significantly better once hooked up directly to a DirecTV box with HDMI cables? I just find it hard to believe that hundreds of reviews I've read on this TV are raving about the picture quality yet it doesnt look great in the stores.

I'd love to get this TV, but im hesitating now.

ANy help would be appreciated.

I have the hl-5087 and the picture is alot better in your own home. The stores don't do it any justice.PS3 looks amazing on it and so does blu-ray movies, regular tv looks as good as it can be useing a s-video cable. It is full 1080p through hdmi or component ecept for blu-rays need to be ran through hdmi for 1080p and component run 1080i.plus the tv will tell you what resi is being inputed. It's a vert good tv and you woud'nt be disappointed.

I have a HL-S5687W and I LOVE it. As far a picture quality, I just have base recomended settings ( including some service menu settings) and its AMAZING. Just those few tweaks and base color settings it looks so much better than what it did in the store. I get constant compliments on it, even the second third forth time theyve seen it. Friend of mine just orderd the 50 Ill let you know how it goes for him.
