I am getting ready to buy a new HDTV for my apartment. I have narrowed my choice down to the Samsung HLR4266W - 42" DLP and the Sony KDFE42A10 - 42" LCD. I have looked at reviews online on both of these sets but I can not decide which one is better.

Does anyone own one of these or know if one is better than the other? Or is there another tv that better than these two? These are the largest tv's that will fit in my entertainment center. Also they are in my price range, I have upt to $2000 to spend. I would like to have one with an HDMI input.

I have an older Sony 42" LCD and I really like it. I do want to purchase a 50"+ DLP and give it a shot. Only thing I am worried about is the "rainbow" effect that I keep reading about. I have not had a chance to audition one yet. I'm scared I might buy one before I can afford one...so I stay home. :D

The only thing I did (notice past tense) not like about my Sony is the refresh rate. Sony won't post that info, but I know it is slow. When I first got it I could notice the blurring. But you get used to that quickly. And the newer sets are faster anyways.

There are many pros and cons for each method, but both are good.

I am presuming that is the sony 3lcd (rear projection lcd)
i was in your position before, samsung dlp vs. sony 3lcd

samsung trumps the sony as per specs.
sony is a sony (id buy the thing simply because its a sony)

anyway, check first if you really don't see rainbows on the samsung dlp (some people do) if not good.

can you compare them side by side?
I couldnt but thought that samsung really was clearer, i dont know if that was my imagination. but make sure you have enough distance between you and the tv (because both of these units are crappy looking from a close distance, make sure to view these tv's from the same distance you'd be viewing them at home ... bring a meter with you to the store)

(in the end i bought the bravia xbr lcd - heehee, so all my deciding between 3lcd and dlp was for naught)

As always, a lot of it is up to your preferences. When I was researching for tvs, I compared a bunch of the sonys and samsungs. My personal opinion was that the sonys had a lot brighter picture in the store. However I felt that the samsungs had more realistic color. Since realistic color is important to me in a picture, I went with the samsung. However many people think that the brighter color creates a more vivid, and therefore, lifelike color.

I'd make a suggestion. When you go to Best Buy or your electronics shop, a lot of times you're looking at a video signal which may be severely degraded by the signal being split too many times. If you can't find these in a higher-end shop, go to your local B&M store and ask them to hook a DVD player up to each tv so that you can compare them. This should give you a bit better idea of how the picture will look.

Either way, you should be happy with your new tv.
