SACD on my Denon 1920 and 3805

I'm new to SACD and I know dvd-a is routed via the 5.1 outs from the dvd, but what about sacd? It seems I'm only getting the sacd's I have to play through the reg. left and right audio outs into the 'dvd' audio ins on my receiver?! Is this right? I think I must have something configured wrong on my receiver....but I'm not sure. Any ideas?

What SACD? Some are stereo only (will say on the case). SACD also needs to be passed by analog unless the 1920 has a Denon-link to connect to the 3805 digitally.

You may have Multichannel SACD, stereo SACD, and/or stereo CD on a SACD disc. Not sure about the 1920, but the 2200 and 2900 have a button on the front to toggle between the available modes and which to default to on SACDs.

no denon link on the 1920....and yeah there's a sacd button on the remote that allows you to cycle through the various formats cd...enhanced cd, sacd stereo and sacd multi-channel.

Both of the sacd's I've purchased are both stereo and multi-channel....but neither format plays through the 5.1 outs. I can only get them to play through the reg. audio outs going into the 'dvd' ind on my receiver. I dont have any dvd-a's so I can't try that format. I think maybe something isn't set right on my receiver unless sacd is suppose to be outputted via the reg. audio outs?! Does anyone know? I had a Ult. Electronics rep tell me sacd plays through the reg audio outs but I didn't understand how surround sound could be processed at a high level via this method, but then again I'm very new to the audio world and all the new various formats.

It should actually play from BOTH the stereo and multichannel analog outputs. On the receiver side, it shouldn't matter what analog input you set it to, because it is analog.

Do you have 6 cables connected from the 5.1 (multichannel) analog output of the player to the multichannel input on the receiver? Then you have to select that input on the receiver (Ext. in, or whatever it's called on your receiver). It should work, because that input is only analog on all receivers. If you only have 2 cables connected, you are not going to get surround. All the decoding is done in the player, so if you only have 2 channels connected, that is all you are going to get.

Yeah it's strange....I have 5 of the 6 cables hooked up (no sub...so I didn't bother hooking that one up...do I need to?), but all the others are hooked up and I've played with the 'ext in' and still nothing with the 5.1, only the 2 channel r/l stereo.

Have you checked the setting on your player? My Denon 2910 has audio settings for 2 chan. or multi playback. Maybe it's something really obvious. Your cables should run to the EXT.IN on your Denon.

Yeah I have them running into the 'ext in'....and I also have the 1920 set to 'multi'......and I hear multi when I have the audio outs plugged into 'audio 'dvd' in.....but not when I have them plugged into the 5.1 'ext. in'....go figure?

So I'm only getting sound when the rca's are running from the reg. audio outs from the 1920 to the reg. audio in's on my receiver......if I plug them into the 5.1 ext in's I hear nothing!

that's why I'm inclined to thinking I must not have something setup right on the receiver.....but what?

How long have you had your 1920?

Double check all your connections. Run your cables from the 5.1ch out on your 1920. Make sure you input the cables into the EXT.IN on your 3805 and also that the cables are correct.(LtoL,RtoR,CtoC...) Check your settings on your 1920 and make sure you select multi under the audio settings. I don't believe there's any settings to adjust on the 3805. Check both manuals to ensure proper setup. Make sure you push EXT.IN on your 3805. And lastly that your playing a multi SACD.

I know I ran through this all over again, but unless there's something wrong with your 1920, it just sounds like something obvious.

My.02 ;)

thx L-jay...but yeah I've done all that....I'm playing Allison Krauss' Live album in SACD Multi and I'm getting the little 'M' on the display on the front of the 1920 but unless it's plugged into the reg. audio outs, no sound!

I get nothing when I press the 'ext in' button on my remote...it cycles through some formats but no sound.

Maybe that button was reprogrammed incorrectly? Don't you have a hard button on there that says ext in?

Try connecting the sub. Maybe it won't work if it doesn't detect a sub signal. Even if you don't have a sub the DSP will mix the .1 channel into the other speakers if you select "no" for sub.

Well...after chating with someone in Ult. Electronics TECH dept. we have it figured out....it's just a bad dvd player...the 'ext outs' on the Denon are all bad except the left front one. Anyway I'm taking it back tomorrow for them to check it there and have it replaced......That's the advantage of buying local. Kind of a pain to ship stuff back to an online retailer....just takes forever most of the time. Besides, Ult. Electronics beat Crutchfields price by a good margin.....though once I paid tax it still came to a higher price than Crutch....to me its worth the few extra bucks to stay local.

thanks for all the feedback guys!

Wow, that sucks, but like you said, at least you bought it local. Let us know how it sounds when you get it replaced.

I dont know about the 2910 but on the 1920 there is an audio menu that you have to page down and change a setting from stereo to multichannel.....even though it may show the 'M' on the front panal display you still have to change that setting. So check it and be sure that you have the dvd player set to 'Multi'.:)
