This is my first time on this site and would like some help understanding these formats. I currently have:
yamaha dvs657
sony strdb930 (as pre amp for fronts, running surrounds.)
rotel rb981 (power for fronts.)
jamo e8 suround
My question is will the sony be compatible with sacd, dvda or do i have to upgrde this. I dont have any discs in this format and before i buy some I would like to know if this set up will do.
Thanking anyone for their assistance.

Your Sony will do the job. I used to have a Sony STR-DB840 that I used to receive DVD-A signals.

I looked up your Yamaha DVD player and it looks like it's a Universal player, so it will play both DVD-A and SACD. You will need to use the 5.1 analog outputs on the dvd player and connect them to the 5.1 analog inputs on your Sony receiver (I'm assuming that your dvd player has 5.1 analog outputs). You will need to use the bass management features in your DVD player to optimize the sound - this involves setting the speakers to small or large and adjusting the crossover frequency for the small speakers.
