I got a Samsung HD841 for $60 on ebay, so now I need some cables. How much does a set of multi channel cables run? i just did a quick search on ebay and didnt really see anything under $50. Is that the going rate for some 3ft/1m cables? Can i just run 2 sets of AV cables (composite/L/R)?

I only own 1 DVD-A disk and I am not going to listen to it all that much so they doesn't need to be "the best" cables. It is more just to try it out.

Absolutely. You just figured out the Holy Grail of audio cables. RCA's are RCA's. Use two sets of components, or three sets of composites. For short runs, you don't need $50 cables. Just a tight fit. Heck, if you looked inside your equipment and saw the tiny solder joints that take the signal to the board, you'd $hit your pants and wonder why anyone spends that kind of cash on interconnects.

I'd snag these, as they will last, and last, and last.

the prob is that for 3 feet i would be spending more on the cables than i have on the player and i cant bring myself to do that. i wouldnt be able to sleep at night

maybe if the cables were in the front and i wanted to show off my $80 cables i would go that route, but i ithnk i am just going to go with 2 sets of $12 AV cables. at least for now.

I see your point, but someday you're going to upgrade your DVD player and entire system. Your Canare or Belden cables will still be highly functional and ready to rock when you do, so you won't have to buy two sets of cables (i.e., cheaps ones now, and durable ones later). Just a thought.

Just buy three stereo audio RCA coax cables and you're done.

I recommend the Philips premium cables you can find at Walmart. The quality is somewhere in between the Canare terminated cables from Bluejeans and the crap you get for free.

I am in the same boat, looking for multi-channel interconnects for my impending purchase of a Denon 2910. What about these? Two sets of 3 footers should do the trick. Are there really any difference between component cables and regular RCA?

BTW, Buckeyefan1, have you seen any good deals on the 2910? :D
I see there are some on UBID.

I found this thread and had a follow-up question. I'm planning on purchasing a Denon 2910 for DVDs and SACDs. The back has all sorts of audio outs including optical and coax digital, 5.1 channel, 2 channel, etc. On my current DVD player, I use the optical out and it works fine for movies in DD.

Do I HAVE to used a certain output to get SACDs (as well as DVDs and DVD-A) to perform at their best? Can I use the optical digital output for this or do I have to use the 5.1 channel output?

There are only a few digital connections that will work for sacd, such as:
1) firewire;
2) proprietary links like Denon Link, but that just passed last year, and it has to be DL3; and
3) there are one or two others, unless you get into professional equipment.

There is some talk of hdmi being sacd compatible, but that's only version 2 (or 3). I just got 12 high quality analog cables from accessories 4 less (thanks to Leprokon's post in this very forum) for $1.49 each! All my research has told me you're going to be hard-pressed to beat the signal transfer from a set of high quality analogs, so why bother with the proprietaries, or wait for hdmi to get their approval/act together and stop antiquating current cutting edge technology?

Analog is your only option!

Johnd’s explanation has pretty much hit the nail on the head. In specific reference to the 2910, it does not offer Denon’s proprietary link, and its HDMI interface is version 1.1, so your only options for SACD and DVD-A playback will be through the use of the multichannel analog connections.

Thanks guys. So, I can't use the optical digital out to pass SACD signals. Does that mean that I would use the 5.1 for SACD and DVD audio playback (i.e. - DD or DTS audio from a DVD movie) also or would I need both 5.1 and optical connected?

If I use 5.1 channel output for all audio playback (SACD, DVD-A DVD movie audio), do I lose anythink or is that equal to / superior than the digital outs?

Question #
1) No, other than described above.
2) Yes, you would 6 analog cables for sacd, but
not dvds, use an optical cable for that signal.
3) No, you will not "lose anything" using 6 quality analog cables for sacd playback, that's as
good as it gets (for sacd and dvd-a, dvd movies need to be connected via optical (ideally),
and yes, 6 high quality analog cables are equal to/superior than digital for sacd/dvd-a.

So just so I'm straight in this, there will be three connections from my DVD player to my receiver/TV:

1) 5.1 channel output (6 RCA) for SACD and DVD-A
2) Optical digital output for DVD movie audio playback
3) Video connection for DVD movies and DVD-A video

Is this right?

If so, I have a follow-up question. I was reading the online version of the Denon 2910 manual and came across the following:

Denon 2910 Manual said:
The multichannel audio signals recorded in packed PCM and the multichannel Super audio CDs can be played when an AV amplifier equipped with analog 5.1-channel audio inputs is connected.

Note: With the DVD-2910/955, we recommend turning the digital output off by using the PURE DIRECT MODE and only outputting analog signals in order to keep interference from the digital output circuitry to a minimum and allow you to enjoy high-quality multi-channel sound thanks to the high-bit, high sampling frequency...
Does this mean that with the Denon, I shouldn't use both 5.1 and optical outputs at the same time? This sounds like a serious limitation...

Yes, you will use the
1) 6 analog cables from your player to receiver for sacd/dvd-a;
2) optical cable (toslink) from your player to receiver for movie (and cd) playback;
3) video connection from player to tv for video playback (component is best, the s-video, composite is worst). Additionally, there is no need to run the video through the receiver unless you have multiple players...so just run it directly from player to tv.
4) You will require a second cable from receiver to tv if you wish to see the on screen display/setup for your receiver. Since this is only for setup/tweaking, and not video playback, s video or composite cable is fine.
5) You can not use both the 6 analog and the toslink simultaneously. One is for sacd/dvd-a, the other for movie audio/cd. You can only play one disk at a time.
6) You will have to set the parameters for the combined 6 analog/1 toslink in your dvd setup. It's not that complicated. Read the manual, and set it up

Ok so there no problem with connecting both the 5.1 and the optical outs...it's just that you don't want to use both at the same time, which really isn't possible anyway since you can't play both an SACD and a DVD movie at the same time.

Makes sense to me. Thanks for the clarifications!!
