SACD, amp & speaker setup

Earlier I bought an Onkyo DV-SP800 SACD/DVD-A player. It is THX-ultra certified and sounds excellent. I have a pair of infinity IL-30s(45Hz, -3db) for the fronts, with a Velodyne CHT-10 subwoofer. The SACD player allowed me to do bass management, as I can set the surrounds and center to small, but not the fronts(the player can't set the fronts to small, so it is always driving full range). Initially when the sub was placed incorrectly, I heard the fronts and the sub were cancelling each other out, producing very low bass sounds(<40Hz) and midrange or above(>150Hz). Now that the sub is placed properly, I can hear very strong bass at frequencies where both the sub and the fronts overlap, while at the lowest frequencies the sub works alone and produced relatively weak bass.
Any suggestion to fix this problem?

I'm not familiar with any of the speakers you have, but if you have the option to setup the low pass filter on the subwoofer, try lowering it, to filter out the overlapping frequencies. Your front speakers are set to large, this means they will play the full frequency range. If they can play as low as 40 Hz, set the crossover on the sub to 40.

Hope this is helpful,

I've seen discussion concerning tihs on other boards. Typically, people have recommended NOT using the DVD player to tweak the bass and sound...so they recommend disabling this feature.

i have the pioneer dvda/sacd player and also experienced the same problem. fortunately, i have the paradigm x30 and opted to use this to complement the front speakers. i noticed that when setting the bass management of the player to sub -none and front to large, the bass is properly routed. so for me, the best set up is front-lagre, surround and center-small, sub-none. i think you can also try the outlaw ICBM.

Hello A

You may want to consider getting an Outlaw ICBM-1 bass management module. It will allow you to set the cross over frequency for each speaker and permit stereo out for a pair of subwoofers if you want. The Outlaw goes for about $250 but doubles the number of interconnects you will need. Works very well!
