I did a bit of a search but couldn't find what I was lookin for. I noticed that all recievers still come with s-video conections, along with composite connections and now hdmi - all video connection. I get Hdmi and everything, but s-video and composite always seemed the same to me, at least the couple times I used them. Does anybody uses strictly s-video where composite would work? thanks

S-Video separates lumiance and chromiance. Composite does not. S-Video was only a marginal increase from composite.

S-video is quite a noticeable increase in PQ from composite. I remember being amazed at the quality difference when I first used S-video cables from my SNES back in the day ;)

I used S-Video for a long time but to my eyes it is no more than a marginal increase in quality over composite.

PQ and color should both be a little better with s-vid, however it typically won't be a night and day difference, and with most displays, component won't be too much better than S-video for the same source material. I noticed an improvement in color going from S-vid to component with my SD DVD player, but the overall PQ was the same at 480i.
