S Video vs. Component Video

I purchased the Sony 50" SXRD Television. Picture, sound, DVD, Surround Sound, all in place and working great. The only thing is that I do not get an image from dvd when I make the (DVD-amplifier-television) connection with component video cables. I only get sound. Everything works fine when I use the S Video connector, so I left it that way. I guess I have (2) questions, What might be wrong with the component video connections?, and does it really matter, the S video connection looks great to me, is there any noticable difference in the two? At this point Im ready to go with the S Video and return the High Definition component video connector to Radio Shack for the $60.00.

its possible your player has a switch at the back that toggles between component and others. (the one on my player is pretty small)

I am at work so i cannot see my dvd player it is some type of Pioneer. I went to their web site and from what i can figure I might need to switch from interlace to progressive scan either with a front button or something on the back?

If you don't need to switch video sources, just go directly to the TV. At the very least, you will be able to make sure the DVD player is functioning correctly. Once you do that, then you can put the receiver back into the equation. What other video connections do you hae to the reicever? Recievers that don't transcode (from one connection type to another) often disable the others, though I'd expect them to favor the higher connection rather than the lower one (s-vid in this case).

You cannot get progressive scan via s-video, only component or DVI/HDMI, so I'd definitely keep that cable.

I just read that i am supposed to set the VIDEO OUT SELECT button on the rear panel of the player to the right to assign component video output. I hope that is it and will take care of it.

Not all players have that though. Most either send the signal out ALL outputs simultaneously or you select it in the player's setup menu, but I have seen players that it is selected on the player itself.

happened to me with one of my sony DVD players. all you have to do is go to the dvd setup menu and change the vid out from s-video to compoent video. worked for me, should work for you.
