I am upgrading later this year, but for now I am stuck with a 27" Panasonic CRT. This beast has no component inputs, a single s-video input, and 2 sets of composite. When using the s-video input, this thing deactivates the other inputs... very poor design. So I'm stuck running s-video out from my dvd player, vcr, and dish network box, out to my receiver, then in to the tv.

Lately I've noticed that when watching dish network programming, things are not as clear as they used to be. I notice lots of artifacting on certain channels. There is also some type of blur that occurs, it's hard to explain though. The best thing I can think of is if you've ever used a cheap miniDV camera with software based shake reduction (known by many other names I'm sure), the end result usually has a slight "motion blur".... I told you it was hard to explain. Anyways, I have that problem with my dish content.

Does that sound like something that could be caused by a bad in inferior s-video cable? I have been meaning to bypass the receiver and run it straight to the TV, see if that helps. Otherways I'll have to go to a dish forum and try to figure out what the problem is.

Anybody else? I'd like to know if it will be worthwhile before spending $30-40 on a nice cable. Right now I'm just using the usual thin black radioshack type cable.

You can get a good s-video cable for $5-$10. Try monoprice.com or even Radio Shack.

I would buy two new s-video cables and at first try a new cable connected straight from the dish network box to the TV. If that looks good then try the dish connected to the receiver and receiver to TV using your two new cables.

You might also want to try resetting the TV to factory defaults and turn off any 'features' like velocity scan modulation or noise reduction. They usually mess things up far worse than they help anything. If the sharpness control is set too high, straight lines will look double. On a CRT, sharpness usually needs to be set close to zero.

Now that you mention it, I'm getting artifacts on my DirecTV channels too. I don't recall if it happened before, but I recently slid a Panasonic DVD recorder into my setup. I wonder if something is going on with Panasonic's filters?
