Hello everyone,

I'am new to this forum and would like some advise. I just redid most of my wiring for the Home Entertainment System and would like to know which cable system is best. Is S-Video better then Componant ( RCA type )?

Thanks,
Sellncars

You may be confused about the types of connections. There are two types of video connections that use RCA connectors, composite and component. Component video is far superior to composite. Component uses three seperate cables, composite is a single, usually yellow colored jack.

S-Video is better than composite but not component.

THIS guide I wrote for another forum may be helpful.

Hey HI HO,
I was very impressed reading your article. I will stick with plumbing and just asking questions, not answering them.

Thanks for the compliment. Your answer was good too, more simple wording than mine. :)

Hi,
Ok, I have S-Video and i have i do believe Componant Red, White, and yellow wires all together. My Denon AV amp will take either. I also have digital optical 3 of them, my dvd player, cd player and Playstation 2 are using them.

Red, white, and yellow would be composite video. Since it's a PS2, I'll assume you have a choice of composite and S-Video.

In that case, go for S-Video. If the PS2 has a digital output (sorry I'm unfamiliar) use that for audio. If not, the red/white cables would be for audio.

Those are composite, not component.

Composite cables are as follows:
Yellow = video
Red = audio, right channel
White = audio, left channel

S-Video is a 4-pin conductor (as opposed to RCA) that gives superior picture quality as compared to composite. You need a separate audio connection

Component video uses 3 RCA jacks, all for video. One jack is red, one is green, and one is blue. Again, you need a separate audio connection.

Composite is worse than S-video is worse than Component.

In your case, use S-Video wherever possible

Hi everyone,

I would to start off by saying, thank you all for your help. Do i need the composite video cable with an S-Video hookup? I would like to run my S-Video from my dvd player right to my amp and eliminate the composite video cable.

Thanks,
Sellncars.

You don't need the composite cable if you're using S-video. You only need one type of video cable, whether composite, S-video, or component.

Running S-video from your DVD player to your amp will work fine, assuming your amp is plugged into your TV with an S-video cable.

The PS2 is also capable of outputting a component video signal with the right cable.
