hello-

I have a yamaha HTR 5590 receiver with Bose Acoustimass 10 series III speaker system. It doesn't seem like im getting the full surround effect. What ive noticed, though, is that the input channel indicator (the L C R RL RC RR on front display) only has L and R lit up. I have tried everything to get the others to light up. ARE they supposed to be lit up or is everything running correctly?

Any help would be great

Yes all those letters are supposed to light up. Either you have it set for 2 channel stereo, or you don't have the speakers turned on in the OSD (On Screen Display) set up menu, or you are not running a 5.1 signal to receiver. Meaning you are using a 2.0 dvd's etc.. Which is highly doubtful.

all speakers are set to large except the RC- dont have one. and i am pushing the THX button on the remote for the signal if thats what you mean.

By the way, there is a LITTLE bit of sound coming out of the rears but not much

Are you running a sub? If so all the speakers should be set to small.

Wow, actually I would not go around here saying that. No trust me, they need to be set as small.
People with main fronts that have 8" woofers in them, will still set them as small. But your lights still should come on.

Did you read the manual pages I had suggested?

EDIT:: Do you have any Dolby Digital DVD's (I am assuming that you do, as long as you have at least 2 dvd's)
Is your dvd player Dolby Digital compatable, How do you have the digital signal hooked up. ?? Through the Optical or Digital coax?

23- OSD- speakers are on large- you say i should go small
24- speaker mode settings all large like p 23

OK, well the first picture below you have taken care of. The second picture is page 36. Read that one, also I posted a pic but could not get all of the page in.

Yes set to small, if you want I can point you in the direction of posts about this topic.

Have you tried using the test tone, and adjusting the volumes for the surround speakers? (Page 25)(Page 66)

Yeah kind of a poor trouble/shooting manual. The only thing close is this.

Just for laughs, tell the reciever you do have a RC channel speaker (set to small) then put in a Dolby Digital DVD, almost any movie thats within 7 years old. And see what lights come on. Does the DD light come on?

yeah i did test tones and they all work. The only thing that i can think of is that the speakers technically run through the subwoofer on a bose system. Maybe that is why it doesnt light up. It doesnt even know that they are there

DOH, I should have started asking this from the beginning. Yeah, I would disconnect them from the sub, and run them straight through the receiver.

Edit::Clearly I had thought you had did this, and thats why all speakers were set to Large, however each speaker NEEDS to be hooked to the receiver , then each should be set to small, the LFE channel set to on, that receiver anything below 90hz is sent to the sub. All frequencies above is sent to the other speakers...

so i shouldnt even use the subwoofer for the speakers? Are you sure? that seems totally wrong since the sub has all the connections for it

Oh you can do it that way, but it defeats the purpose of doing any settings in the reciever.
And it will not be using the receivers processing. Or the recievers power at all. At the moment you are running the amp of the subwoofer only. Which really needs to be dedicated for the sub speaker itself. Not the mains, center and surrounds.

Actualy you should do this. But I believe Radio Shack makes adapters so you don't have to do this. It will be a female rca on one side and 2 speaker wires on the other. This hookup will be the only way that you will be using the processor of the receiver. If you leave it hooked up the way you have it, then you might as well get a cheap stereo receiver, not one that Decodes and processes a Dolby 5.1 signal.
I'm not trying to be rude, just letting you know the facts.
Actually most people here would have just said go and get some real speakers. (And pay way less then what was paid for the Bose setup)

EDIT:: A set like this http://www.fluance.com/fluanceavhtb.html would kill those Bose's and you could get this set on eBay for about 190.00 shipped.
