RXV663 - have dvd audio but no video

I'm setting up my system. All works well until I connect the Toshiba DVD. I'm using an HDMI connection from the dvd to the receiver as shown in the manual. I get audio from the dvd, but can't get a picture on the tv. If I switch to TV viewing the picture works. I've rechecked over and over and read and reread the sections on connecting the dvd. I must be missing the key. Any ideas?

Make sure you have enabled HDMI on your receiver.

I rechecked the settings and they appear to be as they should. Audio still works fine via hdmi, no video from dvd only. I also tried connecting an optical cable from the dvd to the receiver. No change.

What is your receiver and what is the date and model of the DVD player? Also could you see if another device will work via that HDMI input?

You may have an HDMI handshake issue.

did you assign the HDMI input you are using to the specific input (DVD, TV, SAT, etc...) that you are using? Is it possible you are trying to output a video signal your tv doesn't support? Try hooking the dvd player up to the receiver or tv with a composite video cable first, just to check all the settings, then reconnect the HDMI cable and try again, but only after you check your receivers input assignments first.

He gets audio from his HDMI port, so the port must be assigned. The issue is why won't video pass. Either that port is not making a handshake with the DVD player or it is getting sent to the TV in a form the TV won't recognize. We need to look at his manuals if we can.

I'm very familiar with the receiver, since I own it... we need to find out what tv he has. I would also try using the other HDMI input, just for the heck of it, and even try a different HDMI cable of another brand if you happen to have one.

Optical is for audio, not video.

Did you change the input source in the tv's on-screen menu?

Only meant I had changed out ALL cables. I've tried ALL input source selections and no video. I only have two sets of component cables, so I'm going to disconnect a set from my cable box and connect to the dvd to see if that works.

Why are you not using HDMI from your cable box?

Cable HDMI output-Receiver HDMI input (cable/dvr)
HD DVD-HDMI output-Receiver HDMI input (dvd)

Receiver HDMI output-TV HDMI input (1)

Select HDMI in the cable box and dvd players menu for audio & video.

Select HDMI (1) on tv.
Toggle between cable and dvd on receiver for each component.

Have you tried connecting the dvd player directly to the tv, so you can make sure you don't have a bad dvd player?

Problem solved. I connected the dvd via component cables and now have video. Since my cable box doesn't have hdmi, I had connected the tv with component cables. Apparently that means that the dvd also has to go with component. I saw in the RXV663 manual that components should be connected the same way as the monitor. Not a real clear instruction to a novice like me. I don't understand why they have to be the same, but it works now. Next step is to see if I can swap my cable box for one with an hdmi connection.

Glad you solved it. Often it's the one thing we never thought of. We assumed you were HDMI through out. Component is analog and HDMI digital.. A lot of receivers will not convert video signals. That is why you had the problem.

You bet. When you said you had HD cable, I was certain you had HDMI on it. So I figured your problem was sending two different types of inputs to the receiver in post #11. Now, get them cable people on their way.

There shouldn't be any issue sending video to the TV from the DVD with different connections. I've got it set that way with mine. I'm guessing there was an assignment issue somewhere or the TV wasn't connected with an HDMI cable, also.

Was the TV connected to the receiver with an HDMI cable or component cables?

TV to receiver is component. I've swapped my HD cable box for one with HDMI and ordered additional hdmi cables from monoprice. Cables should be here in a day or so. I'll then have everything on hdmi and life should be good again.

I just realized you'd already answered my question in a prior post. My bad. You could connect your cable box and DVD with the component cables and the TV with HDMI. You'd just have to turn on the HDMI Conversion in the settings menu for the receiver.

You didn't really need to get a different cable box, just run HDMI from your receiver to tv, and the receiver will upconvert your component onto HDMI and your DVD player would have worekd perfectly with HDMI. Oh well, at least now you will be using HDMI for both and hopefully you will like it better, if you don't notice any difference, at least you bought from monoprice and didn't pay too much for cables.
