Hello- I have just set up my RX V2400 and I know it's going to be a vast improvement from my previous Sony. The setup seems a bit complicated to me. I ran the Auto setup using YPAO, and the results seem accurate on the screen except it keeps saying one of my rear speakers is out of Phase. I have several question I'm hoping the board can answer:

I don't believe it is out of phase, so should I ignore?

Also, I am running a standard 5.1 setup and use it 50/50 for Home Theater and 2 channel CD. Anyone have any setup tips or sound field setting suggestions based on my setup?

Also, I am connecting my cd player using an optical digital cable. What is the best way to get the source to play through the fronts and the sub?

Finally, w/using YPAO, can I assume the sub setting that it gives will work for 5.1 AND CD music?

I know this is a lot of questions, but I really trust the advice on this board and am hoping to get some help from another RXV 2400 owner.

What is the configuration of your rear speakers? Are they 2 or 3 way?

Don't rely on YPAO to properly set the crossover point of your subwoofer, or for it to properly determine speaker sizes. It should only be used for level and distance calibration and the EQ function should be tested on and off to determine which you prefer.

As for DSP modes, I love 70mm Adventure for movies and Jazz/Rock DSP's for old concert VHS tapes and some DVD music as well.

Thanks for the quick response. My speakers are Dipole/Bipole set to Bipole setting since on rear walls above listening position. They are 3 way (2 on one side one on the other). Thanks again for any and all advice.

If one of the drivers are intentionally wired out of phase in your speaker in order for it to properly sum at the crossover point, the YPAO system will incorrectly identify the speaker as being out of phase. My advise is to check the cable polarity at the amp and speaker side to ensure it is in fact wired correctly inphase. Don't trust a computer to tell you what your ears know better ! :D!

Thanks gene. I'll check the speaker tonight. Any advice on 2 channel cd listening w/subwoofer using optical out? I assume I cannot use the Pure Direct stereo using digital output correct? Thanks again for your responses.

Speaking of DSP modes, do the movie theater modes (sci-fi, adventure, etc.) use all 7.1 speakers? Or am I better off sticking to PLIIx/DD for movies.

Darth,
Pure direct will work fine with digital output, sounds awsome if you have speakers with enough bass of their own, as no signal is send to the SW. The idea behind Pure Direct is that it plays the music "naturally" and bypasses any of the processing circuitry in the reciever.

Thanks all. The YPAO was right, my back speaker WAS out of phase. Also, am I to assume the tone control (Bass and Treble gain) are independent of the YPAO settings and left to be manipulated based on personal choice w/o affecting any YPAO settings? Thanks again to all for the great advice.

I preffer the "straight" setting because you're allowed to use a subwoofer and it sounds like the receiver is a "high end" piece of gear.......he, he, just kiddin'. I have floorstanders and they have bass of their own and with a sub it sounds awsome.

One last question. If the YPAO excercise continues to identify my Center and Rears as Large (they're not), does that mean even if I manually change to small that there may be some Equalization or level discrepencies based on the misidentification? Should I adjust the level for those up since YPAO "thought" the speakers were larger? THanks to everyone for the always insightful advice.

Can someone clear up for a relative newbie the difference between Direct Stereo and Straight Stereo modes. I keep coming back to Straight because it lets me use my sub and makes the sound a bit 'fuller'. Other than that, what's the difference?

Also interested to hear if I should be connecting my NAD CD player with Analogue cables or a digital coaxial - does an analogue vs digital connection make any difference to the processing or lack of it in Direct or Staight modes?

While I'm asking questions... I have a Velodyne Sub - should I switch it to direct mode and let the 2400 set the crossover in auto set up mode or should I be using the internal crossover on the sub too?

I'm using Wharfedale Evo 30's as my fronts
