Gene I noticed that you've kept the Denon 5803 in your reference system.
Do you prefer the Denon 5803 over the Yamaha RX-Z9?

Cheers :confused:

Dsp Az-9

i dont know about gene,but theres no comapare between the two if you ask me.
the az-9 is uniqe yet on the market,and so far no one else get closer to the az-9...
btw the dsp az-9 is even better then the american version of the rx-z9.
i can tell you that when watching films with the dsp az-9,i prefer the yamaha version of movie theater then the THX.
try it and you will see what i mean..

I think everyone will be very pleased and surprised next month to find out why the Z9 is not in Gene's reference system...

No it just means I was too lazy to update it. I will be sending the Z9 back soon so until I get a replacement, I will revert back to the Denon AVR-5803. A few companies want me to review their separates solutions but I am swamped right now so it may have to wait. For now the AVR-5803 will be back in my reference system. It doesn't mean its better than the Z9. I just have longer terms to use it until the replacement comes.

Finally I decided to buy the Denon 5803A. Audioholics has been very helpful in making my decision. I waited for months before I made my decision. I was waiting for Gene's review of the RX-Z9. After I read the review I figured I did'nt need the features that the Yamaha offered and in my opinion after hearing the Denon installed on my system, the Denon sounded a lot cleaner and full compared to the Yamaha. I heard them side by side from the Good Guys store in Studio City California. The Denon sounded better in 2 channel mode. I am not saying that the Yamaha does'nt sound good because I also have a Yamaha DSP-A1 in my family room. They just sounded differently. If you don't have a way of hearing a Yamaha and a Denon side by side you would'nt hear the difference. I would say that the Yamaha sounded a little bright and the Denon sounded warm and full. I owned the Yamaha for 6 years now and I'm still happy with it. I also ordered a 5900 and I'm just waiting for it to complete my new system.

Happy;

Congrats on your new system and I am glad we were of some help to you with our reviews. Please realize it is difficult to ABX receivers to determine which one truly sounds "better". There are so many variables involved (ir. Room, speakers, switchbox, cables, personal preferences, etc). Awhile back I was at a local hifi store where I was trying to compare two Yamaha receivers, the 795 and 995. In their setup, the cheaper 795 sounded better to my ears. I later found that the 995 was going thru more relay boxes and was likely attributing to the sonic degradation I was hearing. In any event, both the Z9 and 5803A are nice machines and have their associated strengths and weaknesses.
