RX Z9 no output to zone 2

Is there a problem with the Z9 and output to Zone 2, I have my HTPC setup with Toslinc(only option) to the receiver and nothing to Zone 2. I have checked everything for connection and setup and a little confused.

I have zone two output from the tunner so I think I'm not crazy. I'm just playing MP3's , nothing copy protected.

I've looked at the manual but it's a poor.

Thanks

In 99.9% of cases, you must use a stereo analog connection for other zones.

I have done that , The Z9 has Digital out and analog out just for zone 2 or you can use the internal presence amp for zone 2 and has dedicated speaker outputs.

Thanks for the speedy reply

Those outputs are likely for sending the signal to another amp or pre/pro, but that may not change the fact that the SOURCE may still need to be connected via a stereo analog connection in order for the processor to accept the signal. I am not familiar with the Z9 so I can't say this is the case, but every other unit I have installed has been this way; you could not use zone 2 with a device using a digital input - CD for example - even though using a digital input still means a stereo signal, zone 2 would only function if I connected via the stereo analog to another input.

Have you tried it with any stereo analog sources? I hooked up a system with a music server and we had the same problem - the PC did not have a soundcard that had analog outs, so we got another soundcard that did. Alternative would be a cheap DAC from Radio Shack intended for laptops with optical output that they sell for $4.

I just had a hd receiver work with Digital RCA input so I guess that Toslinc is a no no for zone 2, next I will need to see if the analog out for zone 2 is live with the digital coax. I would prefer to use the zone 2 outs and connect to another amp.

Thanks

Cool, at least you know it is working.
Are there any Z9 gurue's around?

I looked at a few forums and the Z9 is not talked about much. Here and AVS but it's light.

Thanks

not many RX-Z9 gurus because it costs as much as a good used car. some people who want that kind of ooomph (myself included) probably bought a lower priced yamaha receiver, got 95% of the RX-Z9's features, and added a separate 200 wpc power amp and still paid less for both items than most people paid for their single RX-Z9.

Thanks for that analogy Rocky,
Guess it's all relevant.

Not a guru but perused the manual. Couldn’t find a reason why optical wouldn’t work if the digital inputs were assigned properly (pg 66). What are you trying to send Zone 2 Coax out to – digital amp, another receiver?

My guess is that the Optial in are not converted. My digital Coax input works, I have a HTPC with only optical out. Thats what I use for MP3s. I just orderd a Optical to Coax converter. I think this will work.

Do you have the Z9?

Thanks

No doubt, but I'd still take the Z9 any day.

I have a Z9 W4ZOO, :) but as I don't use zone 2 I can't really help I'm afraid. Sorry :(

RX-Z9 Zone 2 Question....

Pretty new to this great resource for information and I have a question. I have done all the searches prior to posting a new thread just to make sure this has not been covered 10 times already.

I have picked up a used Yamaha RX-Z9 receiver and have a question about “zone 2”. I have nothing connected to the receiver that would be considered zone 2 but I have a RED zone 2 on the front display. I have read through the manual but not much info there. I do not want zone 2 turned on and want to know that if I have a RED zone 2 on my front display is it enabled? If yes, how do I disable it?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

You might try turning Zone 2 feature off, see pg. 85 in manual.

I also have 'Zone 2' on the front pannel display. All I'd say is that if, on the GUI you have:

Manual Setup>Option>Multi Zone>Speaker B switched to Zone 1 and;

Manual Setup>Option>Multi Zone>Zone 2 Amplifier switched to None

...then I do not believe you're using Zone 2 even though it's indicated on the front panel display.

Either that or I've had Zone 2 on for the last 2 years. :D

Hope this helps. :)

Got It!!

I was able to turn off the red ZONE 2 light on the RX Z9. If you go to page 101 & 102 in the manual it tells you how to put the remote into the Zone 2 mode. Follow the steps there and it will tell you how to shut off zone 2. I sent a e-mail to Yamaha support and they told me how to do it.

Now after 2 years you will be able to turn off Zone 2.

Cheers!:)
