Hi I'm new the site, and new to home audio in general. I have recently purchased a yamaha rx-z1 reciever, and now shopping for speakers. The speakers i am now researching are 4 ohms.

Here is the question
I know the z1 can run 4 ohms,
but while I
1) Over tax the unit
2) create bad levels of distortion
3) or am i better of looking at 8 ohm drivers

I am realitively new to this and any help is greatly welcomed

I'd be better of with an 8-ohm speaker. They can dip down to 3 ohms or lower at certain frequencies. Even their DC or voice coil resistance can be in the 3.2 ohm range. In Solid State gear, when in doubt, always go for higher impedance. Even if your gear can accept 4 ohms, to be safe, I'd get a speaker set with 8 ohm nominal impedance. Lesser heat dissipation as well, as your amp is less taxed to send more current at lower loads. Just my thoughts.

As a previous RXZ-1 owner I have used them with Yamaha's NS-300 which are rated at 6ohms but go down to 3.5 ohms as well as Yamaha's notorious NS-1000 which can go down to 1ohms under certain conditions and even after 2 years of hard use, I never had the unit shut down on me or clip for that matter. Just put a fan from Rat Shack if you are concerned about heat.
