RX-V871 versus Avenger Series

The time has come to upgrade my very dated receiver. I currently have Bose 6 speaker, IPod, Ruco, Remote speakers, DVD/Tape, CD Player and computer hooked up to my system. I foresee near future upgrades regarding speakers.

Often say I hate electronics but at this point between 2 IPads, 3 IPhones, 2 Laptops, 3 PC, 1 Mac, 2 printers, 3 cameras, stereo stuff....etc it is safe to say I am in denial.

Back to the current problem I need a new receiver. The RX-V871 looks like it will produce decent sound quality and accommodate my peripherals. However, the Avenger series is looking really tempting. Do I want to go with a low end luxury or the high end luxury?

Based on my apparent hunger for more and more electronics and my love of music...what should I do and why? FYI money to purchase the unit is not a factor...wasting money on something I will not use, need or get any more perceived value is.

It depends on the price you can get for each and which specific Aventage receiver you are considering. The RX-V871 and all of the Aventage line are fine receivers. Probably you would be best served by going with whatever is the least expensive receiver of those you are considering, if purchased from an authorized dealer. Usually, people put too much money in their receiver and not enough in their speakers, if maximizing sound quality is the goal.

Avenger Wins

Decided to break down and hire a professional to assist in setting up my system. Very honest and reputable company...A+ ratings on Angies list. His choice in receivers coincidentally is Yamaha.

His suggestion...The Aventage RX-A1010...lowest price PriceGrabber (great site to get run down of best prices available) $900 list is $1099. Interestingly the top Aventage RX-A3010 I found for $1,569.99 list $2000.

Best attributes about Aventage line, for me anyway, improved sound quality and that all peripherals can be accessed via the TV screen. Got to love that.

Biggest factors in best Aventage unit...size of the area that the system will accommodate.

Also breaking down and purchasing a top of the line universal remote. Dear god the pile of remotes that I only use a fraction of the buttons on each...has got to go.

Thank you all for your comments. Have to close the wallet and wait till I go onto my next purchase...speakers.

Yamaha RX-V871

Hi guys, my first post here, I'd like to contribute (little as I know) and as well ask for some advice carring on this conversation. I purchased the Yamaha RX-V871 back in October to work compatibly with my 65" Panasonic TC-P65GT30 Plasma TV. (Awesome TV BTW) I needed the 3d capability and upscaling my older Yamaha receiver did not offer and take advantage of the HDMI and numerous other features.

I have the Bose Acustimass 10 - 5.1 speakers now, but have them sold and have put together a pretty good selction of speakers that far outdo the Bose in my opinion after getting the true low down on Bose. Not to say that Bose isn't good I was pretty happy with them only I want something more suited for audio and full frequency response. If you've done your homework you realize Bose is lacking in this lower and mid range area but makes up for it somewhat in sound relfection, which is what Bose is known for.

I have new speakers on the way, some are here, some are not. Here's what I'll be running with the Yamaha RX-871.

Front L+R= Polk Audio RTiA9's (Cherry)
Center = Polk Audio CSi A4
Rear L+R Surrounds = Klipsch RF-82 II S (Cherry)
Sub = Polk Audio DSW Pro660wi 12" with
Monster M1000 SW-20 M-Series Ultra 1000 Subwoofer Cable

It's a bit overkill on the rears but I figured for the price I got the Polks and the Klipsch speakers for on Boxing Day it will sound reasonably good and I'm hoping a whole lot better than the Bose I might add. I've heard from forums the Polk Audio RTiA9 speakers require a lot of power to run effeciently and if underpowered could strain the amp? The Klipsch on the other hand run well at lower powers and retain good clean sound. I really liked the sound from them in the showroom even over the Polks sitting side by side nice and crisp. (This is my personal preference). Richness in bass will be delivered by the Polk DSWpro660wi sub, so the freq range from the Polks and the Klipsch speakers should be ok in union.

I'm wondering what would be the best configuration with what I have in audio receiver and speakers as a unit and what I might want to add in the future for more power for better sound and keep the home audio 7.1 and 3d features? I can't afford a new amp right now so I have to make this work and be happy. I do have Zone 2 capability, perhaps I can do something there if I add to 7.1. for example: run fronts on zone 2, add 2 speakers to 7.1 and play in party mode all speakers in my one room?

Question > Would I be better to run the Polks on the L and R front and Klipsch on the rears? I thought originally running the Klipsch SPk's on the fronts. Do you think I will be underpowered primarily with the Polk audio RTiA9's and the sound will be muffled? Note I like my music mid volumes nothing ear shattering, but I do like some volume occasionally if the neighbors are away(!) I do have the other Yamaha receiver, could I use this on the pre-outs to power the fronts and be able to run all the controls, speaker crossovers etc from the Yamaha RX-871 and the way is designed? Please advise - Respectfully Mike

Hi Timoteo

What speakers are you thinking of? Not sure yet...have any recommendations

Budget?...Looking to do it and do it right. From what I have read if you really want the bomb you need to plunk down the $ on the speakers. Which may mean spending up to $2500.

Size of room? No more than 800 feet. Open floor plan type of deal...kitchen/living room/dining room area.

Any input would be great.
