Where do people listen to various things?

I usually put tv at around -35, movies at -30, and if I want to fill up the apartment with music -25 otherwise, it's closer to -32.

What number does the output on my stereo stop at?

I thought about just cranking it to see how loud it gets, but I want to have some idea first.

I think it goes to 0db volume.

its different for every person because people have different room sizes, speakers, tolerance for volume, etc.

personally though, I've never reached 0db even with satellite speakers or floorstanding speakers. (it became much too loud for my ears)

As Mike mentioned, the values really don't mean much from receiver to receiver, but my RX-V2500 runs minus 40 to minus 32 on most movies and minus 44 for most music.

I think the 750 goes to +12 or +14. As was said the numbers mean very little. I run my 1500 around -20 for movies and around -20, as high as -10 for music. If you are real curious about how high it goes; do it without any input. Full volume is going to be real loud.

depending on my memory, i think my 640 reached 0db without any input

I also have an RX-V750, and my normal volume settings are:

HDTV - -30 to -20 depending on background noise level
DVDs - same, but sometimes I might crank it to -15
CDs - -35 to -20 depending on mood
iPOD (with iPOD's own volume setting at near max.) - -30 to -20 (maybe a tad higher every once in a while).

I have never had mine above -15, or possibly -10. But for some reason I think the volume adjustment maxes out at something like +14 or +18 (as opposed to 0) Of course this is basically arbitrary. I liked it better in the days of analog stepped-attenuators (with precision resistor ladders), where 0 dB meant no attenuation.

Yeah. I realized after posting that it would depend a lot on room size and efficiency of speakers.

I'll probably never see 0... I think the closest I've come was -15 or so. It was loud in my little room.
