Yamaha RX-V663 (has 3 hdmi ports)
Panasonic plasma connected via hdmi
Panasonic blu ray dmp-bd35 connected via hdmi
SA 4250 cable box connected via hdmi

I also have a Toshiba HD dvd player. I could just move the hdmi from the blu ray to the hd player when I need it, but was wondering if anyone knew of another solution. HDMI switches are too pricey to add more hdmi connections.

I'd connect the cable box via component video/digital audio since it only sends 720p/1080i max signal for HD anyway and let the Yammie up-convert to HDMI out.

Mike, if the Monoprice switches cost too much (They don't!), you can use component for your cable box.

I hadn't seen hdmi switches that low before. I hadn't checked monoprice. Thanks. So are all the hdmi ports on the receiver the same, meaning it doesn't matter which is used for which component? I thought that since they were marked for tv, dvd, cable, that that's what had to be hooked up. If I connect a second dvd to the one that was for cable it doesn't matter?

Nope, it doesn't matter. They're just labels. You just need to remember which is which for remote usage, but you can rename inputs for display purposes (pgs 93, 94).

I've changed my cable box to a component connection and used the hdmi for the HD Dvd. I can get audio from the HD Dvd, but no video. Right now I'm still using the remote for the receiver (better remote coming for Christmas). The scene setting for DVD Viewing lets me watch and hear dvds on the blu-ray, but when I use that scene for the HD Dvd I only get the audio. I looked at pages 93-94 in the manual for reassigning jacks, but that didn't make much sense to the novice. Since I used the CBL jack for the Hd Dvd, I looked at the setup for that jack. For the HDMI IN it gave me choices of 1, 2, or None. So what does that tell me? Clueless! I have no idea what I need to reset or how to do it to get the video from the Hd Dvd. Or should I just wait for the new remote (Harmony 890)?

CBL HDMI IN = 2 See the back of the receiver.

To expand a bit on the connections that I think you have:

For I/O Assignment:

Blu-Ray -> DVD HDMI 1
HD-DVD -> CBL HDMI 2 (I suggest using DVR for the Input Source)
Cable box -> DTV/CBL Component B (Audio ?) HDMI IN = None

It's easier (less confusing) if you use the alphanumeric connection labels instead of the source labels.

I wouldn’t worry about the scenes at first until you have your sources set up and working properly. They can be modified later. Just use the source inputs now to verify things are working.

For the novice, these units can be frustrating to set up. But we’ll get you there.

AVRat, before I saw your last post this all started to make some sense to me. I made sure I had the input setup as you said and then when I used the CBL button on the remote as the source the HDDvd worked just fine (audio & video). So for now, everything is connected and working. I won't fool with the scene settings on the Yamaha remote since I'll be switching to an 890 very soon.

In your last post you mentioned using DVR as the input instead of CBL. What difference would that make? I thought that using CBL as the source just meant that the source was coming via the port assigned to CBL. Guess I'm still not clear on this.

These forums have been excellent for me because of folks like you who take the time to offer advice and explanations. Thanks so much for dragging me along.

None, except maybe less confusing. The CBL/DTV input makes sense to me that it would get the input from the cable box. Which input source are you using for it?

I thought that using CBL as the source just meant that the source was coming via the port assigned to CBL (HDMI 2).

True, but those are just default assignments. Thats why I mentioned using the alphanumeric connection labels instead of the source labels.

Guess I'm still not clear on this.
It's just a matter of preference.

Oh, you were saying rename that source so it doesn't display as DTV/CBL. I think I'll just hold off on any more changes until I get the new remote. Actually, I'm so ecstatic over the whole setup that I justwatch/listen to it and go WOW!!!

I just use the auto setting for the audio input then you only have to worry about your video source. It seems to work fine in the detection and I spend less time squinting behind the receiver trying to see if things are plugged in right.
This of course could fail miserably if you had multiple sources inputting as the same time.
