Hey all, just picked up the 663 and love it so far. I just have a quick question about matrixing Dolby Digital 5.1 into 7.1. I have all the speakers hooked up for 7.1 operation and listening to something like XM in 7 channel enhancer mode I get output from all 7.1 speakers. When watching something like HD cable that has DD 5.1 for a soundtrack, I have the receiver set to "Surround Decoder" mode and it recognizes the DD 5.1 soundtrack. How do I set the receiver to matrix the soundtrack to a 7.1 output? Thanks for the help.

I am not fimiliar with Yamaha receivers but if you have an option on your receiver for DD 5.1 + Dolby Pro Logic IIx (Cinema or Music). If your receiver has this option then you will have dolby digital 5.1 sound plus sound matrixed into the surround back speakers.

The receiver will automatically choose the decoder that matches the audio format unless it allows you to choose default decoders. If it does, those settings will be in the setup menus somwhere.

If you can't specify defaults, you have to manually choose PLIIx.

You should be able to default everything to use PLIIx, I can do that with my RX-V1800, but since my 663 is only running a 5.1 setup, I can't help any more than that. But you should be able to overlay the PLIIx decoder on top of pretty much any dsp or audio format, even dts-hd ma.

Like GlocksRock said I cant see how you would not be able to matrix Dolby Pro Logic IIx into the surround back speakers. Your Yamaha instruction manual will tell you how to do this. BTW, I have a lower end receiver than you (Denon 688) and you can overlay DLP IIx over 5.1. I use this format for my xbox 360.

I have the 661 and use the PLIIx matrix all the time. In the manual setup menu, there is a function that says "Ext surr" or something like that. You have to turn it on from there. I have a Harmony remote, and there is actually a discrete code that will do this automatically on power up. If you don't have that, you'll need to turn it on manually all the time.

Of course the above is for the 661, but I suspect it's the same. If you want specific button pushes to do it, there is a massive thread on AVS. I can try to dig it out if you need.

OK that was actually what I was missing, the "Ext. Sur." option in the manual menu. Which harmony remote do you have that has the macro to turn this on every time?

I have the 670. You have to add the button as a second step in the power sequence. I think any of them would work for this purpose. The buttons are not on the original yamaha remote, but curiously they are in the dropdowns on harmony setup. Sweet, huh?
