Ive seen mentioned in variouse palces that the receiver has the ability to pass hdmi video when in standby but I cant find the option to enable it.

The manual was no help either.

Any ideas?

It wasn't an option on that reciever, HDMI passthrough came out a few years later.

If you want to send HDMI to the TV after the receiver is off, you could pick up an HDMI splitter for about 40 bucks or so from Monoprice and run a single source to the display separately. Most often this is because people want to view TV without using the quality speakers they spent a lot of money on (for who knows what reason).

I wouldn't do this, but I would recommend a really good remote control that makes it just as easy to use as if there were no receiver in place at all.

Thing is I have 3 kids which means bob the builder, fireman sam, thomas the tank engine and elmo would be bombarding me for a substantial part of the time. When my older son watches Justice League/Avengers/Batman cartoons and whatnot Im good with firing it up for that but yah for the other shows the tv speakers are perfect for being easily ignored.

A good surround system should allow the audio to be kept down lower and sound cleaner than if just the TV speakers are being used which means you don't have a squawking box killing your (and your kids) ears, but just good clean sound.

If you really want to do this, then the HDMI splitter for the cable box is the way to go and you will still want a decent universal remote that will turn on the TV without the surround system and put it on the proper input. But, I've got a couple of kids and they have listened through the surround system for years and it has always played back just fine after I taught them to keep the volume down to a reasonable listening level.
