rx-v2500 vs rx-v2600

I am about to buy the Yamaha rx2500 to use with DSS HD satellite tv, and a Sony KD-34XBR960 tube tv as well as a progressive scan dvdplayer. Tonight I read about the rx2600 which will apparently be available in Oct. Does the 2600 have any features that will make video look better on my tv? The 2600 is more than twice the price of the 2500, and I don't want reciever-envy to get the better of me. Would appreciate any info. Thanks

I'm interested in some opinions on this as well. I've read the thread on the new RX-V2600, and it has a lot of upgrades that I like, but I also have an RX-V2500 that will be on the doorstep Friday morning! Both have the zone capabilities that I need (gotta have tunes out by the pool!) and my Sony KDF-E50A10 will take component or HDMI inputs... but still the nagging receiver envy is creeping up...

The differences between the two just depend on what you feel you need in a receiver. The 2600 will not make anything look better on your TV. It does offer HDMI switching and that's the main thing it has over the 2500. I am assuming your Sony TV has 1 HDMI port but it might have 2. If you need more than 1 HDMI connection than the Yamaha 2600 makes it possible for you to use 2 HDMI devices. If you only need 1 HDMI connection than you can just run it straight to your TV. The 2600 is a little more future proof I suppose because it has HDMI but you can also use an external HDMI switcher if all need is video switching for HDMI. Really both receivers are fine products and I imagine both would make you happy at this time. I would base your purchase on what you can afford and how long you'd like to use this receiver before upgrading again.

After a little more lurking on the 2600 it does appear to be able to upconvert everything through HDMI. So you can run all your components to the 2600 and run a single HDMI out to your TV for all of your video switching. It also has an Oplus de-interlacer for 480i to 480p so this receiver may very well make some things look better on your TV.

By twice the price I meant the Internet price for the 2500, verses the Yamaha dealer (Internet also) price for the 2600. Approximately $600 vs $1300. Sorry for not being clear.

Mobius is correct. FYI, these units are using the HDMI 1.1 standard not the new 1.2 that handles both DVD-Audio & SACD.

Yup, I currently have DISH 942 HD DVR connected to my HD Projector through 2500 and have no problem with 480P, 720P, or 1080i (through component video connection).

I was set on a 2500 until I saw the specs for the 2600. Are street prices really $1300 for the 2600? I haven't seen any vendors (at least internet vendors) with these in stock where I have seen plenty of the 2500s available online.

The 1600's and the 2600 have not shipped yet. It should be any day now that stores and their opening orders are in.

I figured as much, Yamaha seems pretty good about quickly posting .PDFs of their product manuals, something missing from their 2600 product listing.

Does anybody have a good link comparing the 2500 and the 2600?

The site map on Yammy's web site has a "compairison section" But it does not list the 2500 compaired to the 2600.

For what it is worth I printed out the specs on both the yammy's that I was compairing and crossed out the things that they had in common. What I was left with was the dif. That is how I choose the RX-V657 vs the RX-V757.

Hope that helps some.

Thanks for mentioning the comparison section, it looks like a comparison of existing products (vs. a comparison of existing vs. new products).

I did as you suggested and printed the details for both receivers, after looking at the sheets, the differences seem to be:
  • HDMI, up conversion, and 480i/p deinterlacing
  • XM satellite ready
  • Seperate Zone 2 remote
  • 22 vs. 19 surround programs
  • THX Select 2
I'm waiting to see what the street on this receiver is going to be, most of the local merchants that are Authorized Dealers are discounting about $300 off MSRP, so that would put the 2600 at $1,100 + tax. I gotta think about that :)

So all you have to ask youself is do you need the new stuff? And is it worth the extra money to you to get it?

Souds like you have some awesome stores in your area. 1100 for the 2600 would be a steal!

The thing of it is that I need absolutely none of the new features now, I am in a relativly small apartment running a 5.0 (no subwoofer) system with a Denon Pro Logic receiver (I will never own another Denon product, long story). But I am one that doesn't mind spending more money and keeping the equipment a long time.

The $1,100 is an assumption on my part, but living in SoCal, there is some competition. I am hoping that the Authorized Yamaha e-tailors will ignite at least some pressure to keep prices down.

Nope hate to burst your buble on that one bro. Authorized E-Tailors can not sell below MAP. (Or at least they are running a risk of loosing the line if they do and are caught, anyways!)

But living in SoCal and the tons of retail stores you should be able to find a good deal

Blessed,

I have the 2500 currently and see no need to upgrade. I will not upgrade unitl Yamaha figures out they need to make a mid level receiver/prepro capable of running both surround back and presence channels simultaneously.

THX2.....so what
HDMI.....I have no components with HDMI
Zone2 remote.....I don't use zone 2 or 3 on the 2500
XM ready.....I'm not going to pay for radio stations
More surround programs.....General and Adventure are the only 2 I use anyways

Nope, don't see a reason to lay out any extra dough. As soon as I can run 9.1 (or even better 9.2) in a receiver or prepro (as I already have the external amps for 10 channels) at ~ $2000 or less I will immediately open my wallet and plop down the cash. Until then, keep trying Yamaha.

I called the first of the week and stores do have the units. Some of them will not put them out until they sell out of the 2500s. One I talked with says he will sell one out of the back, but not put them on display yet after I pressed him to tell me whether or not he actually had received them.

One of the local chain's that do carry them in the SoCal area (Ken Kranes Entertainment, an authorized dealer) said they expected them at the end of the month. I think what I will do is go in and offer them $625 for the 2500 which is the average price for non-authed dealers next week when I have the money, if they don't take it, then I will hunt for the 2600.
