I have set cooling fan to run continuous and looked to see if it works and it does not. If you look through top vents(flashlight helps) towards left side you see the fan between transformer and heatsinks? Anyways it is clearly visible in an upright position. It does not turn at all. Darn recv'r runs really hot. Hotter than any equipment I have ever had. It worries me that something is not right. I have seen this mentioned before in other posts. Thinking about getting a little battery operated fan to keep it cooler.

FYI, 2500 has nothing above/beside it so it gets plenty of air as it sits atop my audio tower.

I wonder if this is why my 2500 keeps going into "pure direct" on it's own sometimes. I removed it from the tv stand (which gave it a clearance of about 1 1/2 - 2" of headspace), but it still goes into pure direct after about 20-30 minutes of use. My remote control capabilities vary when it's in pure direct, as well - I can push the "THX" button to try to take it off of pure direct, but it sometimes displays the message "not available" ! I have tried to find something in the manual on the fan...but I cannot see any way to try to control the fan manually. I'm taking mine in to my local dealer Monday. ugh...now to "UN"-hook all those cables and wires!!! lol! Here's my 2500's home...

Cheers,
Paul.

There were a couple posts a while back about cooling the 2500. The gist of it was this: Make sure you have head room above your receiver as well as enough holes in the back of your cabinet. So much of the new oak cabinets that are housing wide screen TV's etc. were not designed with cooling mind.

I remember one guy taking an old computer CPU fan and converting it so that it would run on the switched power outlet on the back of the amp. Personally, I went to Target and bought a little 4 or 5 inch fan (under $6) and have it mounted on the back of my cabinet and then plugged to the switched outlet. Not the prettiest thing if you go and look behind my cabinet, but nobody ever does that. My 2500 now runs cool to the touch, even after a long weekend day and night of music and/or movies (even with the front glass door closed).

RXV 2500 cooling fan

I had the same problem with my cooling fan, and spent hours trying to get help from Yamaha. I bought my unit from a NYC-based "unauthorized" reseller, so Yamaha wasn't helpful at all. They have recently been refusing to provide assistance and/or honor their warranties on any retailer that is not "authorized". This is basically their means of enforcing minimimum suggested retail prices for the units. Anyway, I eventually got Yamaha Canada to admit that there is a known issue with the 2500's firmware whereby the continuous mode for the cooling fan does not work. A new firmware version has been released, but unless you purchased from an authorized dealer they will not upgrade it for you. If you are still under warranty and purchased from an authorized dealer then they will upgrade it for you. They insist, by the way, that the only problem with the old firmware is with the "continuous" mode and that the default thermal mode works fine and the fan will kick in when needed. I was able to verify that my fan does indeed work thru a fairly cumbersome process in diagnostic mode, so my only leap of faith is that the thermal switch functions properly. Yamaha does not recommend running the fan in continuous mode as it is somewhat noisy.
