Anyone have experience with a Yamaha RX V1? If so, is there any truth to the often mentioned "channel drop-out" problem? If there is, what is it and is it fixable? Also, for $2K is there a receiver out there that is a better deal...considering I want a good tuner?

Thanks,

Mac Guy

Mac Guy, I'm in the same boat as you. (looking for a receiver under 2K.) I currently own an older 5.1 Yamaha receiver, which replaced an earlier prologic Denon receiver. I always felt the Denon sounded better for stereo music than the Yamaha, and in fact, I still use the pre-ins on that receiver for my two main speakers. But I can't see spending the $2400 for a Denon 4802, and especially the $4300 for the 5803. (Same goes for the Yamaha Flagship.) If I had the $$ I'd probably look seriously at the Sunfire Ultimate receiver, which I've been quoted $3400 for, but I don't.

However, I was in looking at the top Yamaha last week and mentioned my concern about the less than satisfactory sound for music. The dealer said, "I've got just what you're looking for!" He showed me the new Rotel 1065 receiver. It has the best sound I have ever heard from a receiver!!! It has all the features of the $1500 Rotel preamp/processor (7.1 /multi-zone/etc.) plus a tuner and 5x100 w/c amp. You need to add a stereo amp for the 7.1, but it has the full Dolby Digital, DTS, and Prologic II processor complex. And it lists for $2000, with a street price a couple of hundred less. I think I'm hooked, just waiting for my tax return (and another paycheck, etc.) In the meantime, if there is a Rotel dealer near you, you realy should go listen to this receiver. I'll be very surprised if you don't fall in love with its sound like I did. Either way I would like to hear your opinion of it.

For that matter, I'd like to hear from anyone who has any experience with the new Rotel 1065 receiver Thanks in advance, Tombstone.

Upgraded my RXV 800 to RXV 1 and can tell you it is excellent as usual. No chanel drop outs, never heard of them. I am using an MX 1 for main amp though.

I have had my RXV1 for over a year, after first 5 months, I lost the rear center channel, took it in to the service center and showed the technition how it all works, and presto! it changed from the rear center to the front center, being an installer of such equipment, I assured the technision that it was wired correctly.
Whatever the case, there was one channel amiss!
Within 3 days Yamaha had express delivered a new one (Australia) and confirmed that it was a problem with earlier variants of the RXV1, and that prob is long gone! No complaints about service thats for sure! 3 days is unheard of in Australia let me tell you!
As for sound?
DD/DTS DVD = AWSOME! YOU WONT FIND BETTER!
CD STEREO MODE = ####! STEREO AMP MODE WEEK AS PISS!

REMIDY?
ADD A ROTEL 200watt per channel x 2 amp to the front channels L/R and let the heavens open up to your ears!
YOU WILL NOT HEAR A BETTER SYSTEM FOR THE MONEY! OR EVEN 3 TIMES THE MONEY!

My equipment=
Reciever    = YAMAHA RXV1
MAIN channel amp = ROTEL RB-1080 200watts a side (grunt!)
Front main = Jamo D590 L/R 300watts each (need big amp!)
Center      = Jamo D5CEN
Rear L/R    = Jamo D5SUR BIPOLE

Hey Mac guy.

Until recently I owned a Yamaha RX-V2090 receiver, and loved it. Its reliability, and clean sound were very impressive. I did however trade it in for Denon AVR-3600(110W/Ch@8ohms). I found that the Denon did a better job playing music then the Yamaha. I looked into the RX-V1 when I was going to upgrade receivers, but found that it could not match up to the sound I was looking for. Don't get me wrong, the RX-V1 was a kick ass receiver, but the softer sound of the Denon had grown on me. You should maybe look into the Denon AVR-3803, and pair it with a power amp down the road. The 3803 has a very clean preamp stage and lots of power(110W/Ch@8ohms), it will do any system justice even without a power amp. I matched my AVR-3600 with a Denon POA-5000 power amp(to wake up my main speakers) and its all the system I'll need for a while. Yamaha or Denon, you'll get good results either way.

My gear:
Denon AVR-3600 receiver
Denon POA-5000 power amp
Paradigm Reference Studio 100's (front)
Paradigm Reference Studio CC
Paradigm Reference Studio 40's (rear)
Paradigm PW-2200 (sub)

Happy spending.

I own two (2) Yamaha RX-V1 receivers and have problems with both as to lack of channel output on more than one channel. The main problems are intermittant out on R/R and no output for Center Rear or Front Center. the Right Rear on occasion works. I adjusted the output with little luck. The biggest problem for understanding is on test all work (except R/R) the Front Center work, the Rear Center work but no audio out no matter what mode I choose when playing music or whatever. I have cleaned the connectors, changed connectors and still the units just do not play correctly. I have a RX-V1400 and it works perfect and on all channels with the same connectors and Speakers. I am beginning to wonder about Yamaha Products although I have owned and still own several of them (three different Receivers.. RX-V's)
Does anyone know if this is a design fault with Yamaha..would appreciate any help with this matter, as one could understand it is very frustrating to say the least....

I think this had something to do with the internal relays for the preamp/amp connections. I would try physically bridging the preamp outputs and amplifier inputs if possible.
