The A700 is this year's entry level model while the 3900 was a upper/mid level model from a couple of years ago.

The biggest differences:
The A700 supports 3D while the 3900 has much more power and features.

The choice depends on your existing and future equipment and what you're looking for in a receiver.

HDMI 1.4 gives you 3D. That's about it.
The amp section in the 3900 is much better than that in the A700. I'm not sure about the differences in connectivity. (XM, Sirius, Ipod).
The A700 is blue and the 3900 is orange. :D

What else do you have for equipment?
In particular, speakers.

If this over hyped 3D gimmick is not important to you, I'd spring for the RX-V3900 in a heartbeat. Like the A700, it supports multipoint YPAO. It can be networked as well. Where the RX-V3900 has it over the A700 is its amplifier section. The RX-V3900 has avery strong amp and power supply section much more so than the A700. Thats my recommendation.

Definitely go with the 3900, it's a top notch receiver.

Isn’t there a sale on the RX-V3900 here on AH at a ridiculously low price? Seems like a no brainer to me.

I appreciate the replies on this one as well. I am/was in the same boat (agonizing over newer receivers with crazy-cool features and the wise member advice that receivers are "disposable" / it's better to buy last year's model used). I think after much research I fall into the latter camp as well though I am still tempted by the new ones! :)

I think this thread just sealed it for the RX-V3900 or perhaps even the RX-V1900. Once more, reliability ratings on CNET, ZDNET, Amazon, appear positive (all but 2 reviews were fair/good but the reviewers were fussing about things that didn't seem issues to me).

That's another nice thing about buying a model that's been out for a bit. You get to sort of check reliability / failure rates from those who are kind enough to post reviews. I was going to purchase a used Marantz but saw a few models with failure problems - nothing against Marantz, I just got tired to trying to research which ones were which.

Totally off subject, but now if I can just decide on a WIFI interface for Internet Radio (so the wife can listen to KLOVE), perhaps the "Myine Electronics IR001 WiFi Internet Radio Adaptor"... This would be with the 1900 of course.

Thanks again OP & members!
