Watched it the other night. LONG time F1 fan, and the season this movie discusses is actually about the time I started watching (dating myself?) A lot of people and media are touting it as Ron Howard's best, but I can't say I totally agree. Not sure what I would say IS his best, but this wasn't quite as good as I think it could have been and I went into it really wanting to love it because of the subject. Is it a good movie? Yes. Is it a classic movie? I'm not sure.

It has a little of everything and tells the story well IMO, but it seems to never let loose of this ominous undertone all the way to the end; meaning it is relatively negative with respect to the two main characters overall. Was that intentional? Maybe I am being too picky and that could stem from the fact that I wanted to be like these guys when I was a kid lol (Senna, Prost, Andretti were more my time though). It is a good contrast of the two very different personalities of Lauda and Hunt, but they still felt a bit too much "essence" of their characters than what I expect the real guys were probably like, no doubt to make a point and add to that contrast. The playboy vs. all business. There's a lot of interesting background on each of them, and that's primarily what the story is about: how they arrived at contention for world champion. The performances were excellent and the actors very well chosen for the roles. I'll have to watch the extras because I'm curious what Lauda thought of the film since I'm sure they consulted him for it (he has a cameo); Hunt is no longer with us.

The racing was another point for me. Portrayed well, some nice shots, but not enough of it IMO and too much CGI. In this day and age, there's no reason CGI shouldn't be near perfect. A few instances on long shots, it was not well done much to my disappointment, but they went out and got some real footage as well. They also used what appeared to be actual footage as well in a few scenes. CGI aside, the palette is a bit dark, but the image is clear and looks great. Audio is very solid here as well. Good LFE, a nice mix, and excellent use of surrounds.

If you are familiar with that season then there's no surprise here, but it was one hell of a season for F1. Don't spoil it by looking it up if you don't know, because it was almost as much of a nail biter to see it in the film as if watching it live. It was cool to see the 6 wheeled Elf Tyrrells again too. One does NOT need to be a F1 or race fan to enjoy this film, but it sure doesn't hurt :) Recommended.

I watched an interview with Daniel Bruhl and he said he got to meet and heavily consult with Lauda about his role and what he was like. I believe he said Lauda was happy with the movie and the way he was portrayed. To add to that, Bruhl said that Lauda is a lot more like the way he acted him than you might expect :p

It makes sense, since that level of determination is usually what it takes to be a world champion, and clearly he's a tough one. At one point, Lauda says to Hunt "They don't fear you..." and later on from Hunt to Lauda the comment was "Sometimes it helps if people like you."

Very true. I wonder how accurate that was when Hunt beat the heck out of that reporter when Lauda was making his comeback.

I think my favorite scene in the film was in Italy in the countryside and the guys give them a lift and they're all giddy and laughing "Nobody is going to believe effing Nicky Lauda is driving my car!", and then she looks at him and says "Should I know who you are?" lol

I think it is the way they wrap it up at the end that makes the film deliver the most impact. The message is a good one.

That was a great scene. She walks out into the road and they pull over only to walk up to him. lol

All this talk makes me want to watch it again.

I watched this flick last night. What a heck of movie. It makes me respect Lauda that much more even though he had the personality of sandpaper. I too loved the reporter seen where Hunt force feed the report his portable cassette deck. It was the first time in the flick where I thought Hunt showed some depth. I wonder how accurate they portrayed Hunt's character. He lived like each day was his last and maybe he knew deep down inside that he would die an early death.

They say he was smart so he might have had an idea that booze, coke and cigarettes would contribute to a fatal heart attack. It's actually a wonder he made it that far considering his financial resources. I have to give him credit for that. I never would have made it past my twenties.

I went and did the wiki thing about Hunt. It was an excellent movie and I believe they did what they could to stick to the real story while adding a little extra animosity to the relationship between himself and Lauda to make the film marketable. That's fine with me because I watched a good film.

I heard that Niki Lauda was consulted and Lauda ensured that the story was as accurate as possible.

From: ‘Rush’ only hints at race-car driver James Hunt’s exploits | New York Post

... the movie’s main narrative element — the bitter rivalry between Hunt and Lauda — was exaggerated for dramatic purposes. In life, the two men were good friends and shared an apartment in their youth. But when has Hollywood ever let the truth get in the way of a good story?

I saw it a few weeks ago and really enjoyed it. I don't know that it was a great movie, but it was a good story, well done and seemed to stay pretty close to the truth.

Just got my BD copy in. So thankful to see it in a far better environment (mine) as the theater I went to had serious audio problems. Dialogue was lost and the cars had nowhere near the grunt they should have. Love the film, love the slightly exaggerated story, and in case anyone didn't know, I love F1!
