I have a friend that is going to power a pair of Polk RTI12 towers, a center and RTI6 as rears with possibly the new AVR740. Is that enough power? It is rated at only 85W per channel, while the AVR7300 (HK by the way for both), is rated at 115W per channel. The AVR740 has the features, but for some reason all of the HK's have low power ratings, in comparison to others like Marantz, Onkyo and Denon, which are usually rated at at least 100 W per channel in just about all of their receivers. Why is there a difference and should the HK AVR740 be enough, or does he need to do the AVR7300?

Features aside, the AVR7300 can do a better job on the RTi12 than the 85WX7 AVR740.

Thanks, I appreciate it, any other advice, what about onkyo's?

Other than the 7300, he could get a Yamaha RX-V2500/2600 or Denon AVR-3805/3806, plus a 2 or 3 channel amp such as Outlaw, Adcom, Parasound. I don't know anything about Onkyo but it should be fine for the RTi12 as long as it is paired with an amp. Those big towers need a lot of power to get the best out of them.
