RS-232 what does it do?

On my yamaha RX 1500 there is a RS-232 plug, what does it do?

rs-232 is a serial communication protocol. On the receiver it is probably used for doing firmware updates. Some companies actually support remote control via the rs-232 interface but the specs of the remote protocol are almost never public (custom installers can get them).

For all intents and purposes, it is useless for the consumer.

With the Yamahas the RS232 makes it possible to control via a computer.
Unlike the firmware updates, this software is available on the Yamaha website.

Pioneer uses it to output the results of the multi channel acoustic calibration onto a computer for visual inspection and manipulation of the settings.
