Right up Mikado's alley. I was a school bus driver back in the mid 90s, and was taught if there were lights ya stay put. I'd rather avoid them altogether if I can. I remember one accident in '95 in Illinois with a bus that been hit six feet in the back. Turns out it was a signal and track length issue. School buses are 38' feet, and the track at the crossing was around 30' feet. That was a weird one cause it took three intersection signals to change before RR signal turned green. And when it did investigators said they had but a few seconds to clear the track. There are other issues like one train oncoming while crossers are not aware of the other coming right behind, at the same time, or from the other direction. I've been watching some videos for amusement to be honest, but thankfully most of the accidents occur when the train isn't going that fast. The ones that are going like 50-60 mph are total devastation. The longer trailer accidents I can see happening, but the cars, motorcycles, or worse people crossing and not paying attention to the horns. (I'm presuming the people are deaf or have headphones in.)

Anyway I'm sure Mikado has some interesting stories.

The crossings where there is an incline are a doosey. Trailers will get caught in the middle, or winter cannot be good. Or cars stuck between the crossings going down. Just drive thru them and get the hell off the track. One railroader said they really fear cement trucks and trailers with cranes on them. Imagine that is what can cause derailment.
