Rotel RC1070 Subwoofer setup

I'm considering purchasing a Rotel RC1070 (two channel preamp). The outputs are two RCA (L and R channel), which is fine for the left and right channel, but how would I go about properly adding a subwoofer? It doesn't have a LF out. What's the best way and how would I go about selecting a channel to run the sub out of...or is there something I'm missing?

Never bought a 2channel preamp before.

Thanks,

L/R pre-out to subwoofer L/R in and then speaker wire to the main speakers. Use the cross-over built in to the sub.

Just make sure your subwoofer has a left and right line level input. Then, all you will need to do is get a couple of "Y" connectors to send the preamp out to both the poaer amp and the sub's amp. Adjust subwoofer accordingly.

Either that, or make sure the subwoofer has a left and right speaker level input.

If you buy a subwoofer with just one input, then get back to us. It can get expensive then.

Hello Chad,

I own the RC 1070 myself. Use the second set of pre outs on the pre amp and run those to the input on the sub. Some subs only accept a single line in cable, some offer a left and right input on top of just LFE input. If you only have a single LFE input use the left and right pre out on the pre amp and converge both left and right into a single line. Monster makes these kinds of adaptors as well as some other companys if im not mistaken.

However you might want to use the speaker terminals and sub crossover if your speakers can't run full range.

What model of subwoofer and speakers are you using ?

I've found that in my experience this might well result in both channels being combined into a mono signal for the entire signal path, extending back to the original two channels as well as to the subwoofer.

I might be wrong on this particular preamp, but that's been my experience with others.

Actually Mark I think your right on that one. I brain farted for a sec. I took the LFE off my receiver(before I switched to dedicated pre amp) and split into left and right and got better output off the sub instead of going into just the LFE on the sub.

Sorry for the confusion. Cant this work in reverse ?

Not from my experience.

You can take one output and send it to the right and left channels without a detrimental effect, as in one LFE channel to both channels in a sub, but you can't combine two outputs into one input w/o combining the signal forevermore.

There are specific crossover/combiners that will do this. Paradigm (and others I'm sure) make them but these may cost more than simply getting a sub with the needed r/l inputs.

Thanks for all the responses, they were helpful.

I'm probably using two active monitors from Behringer (the Truth's). So, speaker inputs won't cut it. Either that or some of the new similar active monitors M&K is planning on introducting later this year.

The sub is going to be a M&K K-10.
