Room treatment advice please

I plan to invest about $1000 in some room treatments to try and tame the highly reflective nature of my room. I also need to improve the sound stage so that the side chairs arn't left with crap sound. My though was to start with 2 GIK Tri-Traps for the front of the room and 6 GIK 242s to control reflections on the side walls. I intend to make the riser for the rear seats using the plan posted on the 5th. I've included a rough visio drawing of the room so ya'll can see what I'm working with.

None of the speaker placement are set in stone. Should I lay this out as is or put the TV on the wide end of the room and go from there? In the future I would like to put in a projector and put all the front speakers behind a screen.

Slats:

The treatment you describe is very lightweight for a room this size - I would add more corner mounted bass trapping, and I would use all 4" panels [no 2" panels] for the early reflection control - you could benefit from the additional LF control and the cost differential between 2" and 4" thickness is small.

Also, your rear speakers might work better if there were symmetric.

Have you optimized your sub location?

I would suggest getting an input from an acoustician, like one of the posters like Ethan Winer here. That room will do funny things with sound. Like a tunnel, then you are in an open space. Don't like it.

I would also suggest moving the side speakers closer to the primary listening position and your room would benefit from a rear center speaker as well.

I agree with Mtry. In my case it was Glenn at GIK. When I needed bass traps I sent him a copy of my floor and then we chatted on the phone about options. It was a night and day improvement in the low frequinces with the Tri Traps in place. From all that I have read, you could do just as well dealing with Ethan Winer. In anycase, two thumps up for the Tri-Traps, Glen and Ethan.

Will the 4" still provide enough high frequency absorbtion? One of the more annoying of the room is a noticable harshness in the highs.

I've given up on getting the sub right until I can tame the room some. Where it is now isn't the best for the main listening position but it is more consitant across all seating positions.

The surrounds are symetrical when measured from the front/rear walls and the floor. Are you suggesting having one closer to the listening position?

EDIT: Big detail I've left off :) these are Definitive Technology speakers I got many moons ago ( BP20 mains, CLR2000 center, forget what surronds) and they are all Bipolar. In 2ch mode they have a very large sound stage but things get funny in 5.1. Moving your head 3-4" makes an audible difference when 5.1 is running.

Definitely check out the GIK products. A great affordable solution.

Absolutely... a 4' mineral fiber panel will absorb both lows and highs well... and early reflection control should help sharpen the stereo image.

I do agree with Scott about using the 4" panels, but really if you get enough of the bass traps in the corners, using 2" panels for the reflections will work just fine. It really comes down to money and space in your room.
Slats, I got your email (thank you very much) and have Bryan working on it now.

Thanks,
Glenn

Placed the order. I will be doing 6 tri-traps for low frequency ( 4 front 2 back ) and 6 242s to control reflections. Painting the room now and my chairs arrive soon...yay! once the traps are up I will post some picks.

Slats.

If you want some assistance with placing things, shoot me an email. Or, if you just want to play and learn what different placements do, that's a great learning experience.

Let me know either way if you have questions.

Mostly playing right now since I don't have the chairs in. Once the chairs are in and on the riser I'll probably need help.
