Room setup advice needed

Afternoon folks,

I was hoping I could get a bit of input/advice on setting up my living room system. I just moved into a new house and the living room is less than ideal.

It's rectangular room that measures approximately 17.5' in length by 11.5' in width. Since I don't think I can upload an image, I will do my best to describe it here.

W = Window
- = Wall space

Edit: Here's a better picture..

At the top is the entrance to the dining room and hallway with a small stretch of wall between. On the left side is one small window. On the bottom side is a large bay type window in the middle and the main front door on the edge. On the right side there is a closet and then attic door as you walk in.

Originally I had the TV on the North wall, between the Dining and Hallway entrances. It was off centered though and bugged me. I also had the couch against the South wall/Window, which limited my rear speaker placement options.

Since then I've been toying with ideas. I now have the TV setup on the left wall blocking the small window, with the center underneath (Since I can't hang it above due to the window), and the fronts about 3 feet to the L/R, respectively. I have the couch about 40% back, and was going to hang the surrounds pointing down. Problem with this setup is it just seems there's little room to move.

My next idea was going to be trying a diagonal setup of some kind.

Any ideas/input? You guys seem to be quite the experts here and I would appreciate any input if you guys can provide it (Working with my somewhat limited and lacking drawing).Seating is a 3 person couch and possibly a single chair as well. Trying to make a good compromise between good sound and furniture. It's not a fancy setup, just a decent Onkyo HTIB that has served me well for a number of years.

Thanks.

PS. My drawing did not turn out too hot it seems...

Your best set up for acoustics, if I am understanding you right, is having the system on the left wall and you sitting 40% or so from the front or back wall.
Do you plan on treating the room? You are not going to be symmetrical in the room so more absorption on the lower corner to balance the left and right will be needed.:)

Well, treating the room would have to pass the wife, so that may not fly. This is more of a temporary arrangement (Ok, well, temporary for a year or two) until we get settled and I can finish off the basement and actually make a real HT room. So, yeah, probably no treatment of this room.

I am going to try setting it up tonight, per your suggestion. I figure my options are pretty limited so I'm just looking at the best I can get away with at the moment.

Thanks for the input.

Seriously, I have no life.

Thanks for the input.

But, this is a temporary condition:D so, hang in there, you will make it no matter what for such a short time.
Then, plan ahead for that basement. You cannot plan enough; better than remodeling soon afterwards.;)
