Room Acoustic Advice

I am looking for advice on room acoustics. I have my setup in my living room, and would like to keep things clean, so to speak. The room is 14x20, and the speakers are firing across the shortest part of the room (14'). I have hardwood floors and a bunch of openings (an open floor plan). There is 5 openings in the room to other areas (2 hallways, dining room Kitchen, and a foyer). I have 2 small windows curtains in the room, along with a sofa and love seat. I need something to get rid of my echo chamber, any suggestions.
Thanks Desrock

A 9' x 12' rug on the bare floor would be a great place to start.

A. a nice thick rug

B. Floor to Ceiling curtains

C. Two walls full of books

D. Soft cloth upholstery and big throw pillows for the sofa.

Then we get the money stuff.

Like a sound absorbing drop down accoustical ceiling.

I was going to add my $0.02 but sdjgdp pretty well has it covered!

Well, I'll add $0.01: If you can, put the bookcases on the wall behind the listening/viewing seat. The aborption and diffusion they offer can help make that wall "disappear" acoustically partly by killing any "slap echo" between it and the wall behind the speakers.

Bookcases are definately the audiophile's friends!

Then futz around with speaker and listening positions to find the best sound and enjoy.
