I don't know where to begin except to say that I hope we don't already have a thread on this. The
IMDB Review was way off the mark on at least Christina Aguilera's 'wailing out of control'. I'm not even a fan of her's but both my g/f and I remarked about the quality of her contribution. I'm more of a
Shakira fan. Anyway ... let's get on with this ...
The Rolling Stones ... these guys must have made a deal with the devil to party hard and live forever but they didn't count on becoming walking demons that hell itself won't have anything to do with.
First ... my take of the Stones: love 'em. Their recorded music is my pleasure to listen to.
2nd ... my take of the film: 3.75 / 5 stars on the weight of the interviews and film beginning/ending mostly. Martin Scorsese seems to know how to put a movie together.
3rd ... my take of the concert: can't hold a candle to
PULSE. These guys are too old ... too strung out. Mick did a good job with
Far Away Eyes but listening to him trying to sing while running around being a 'white soul dancer' just pissed me off. I wish that Jamie had mixed the recording. I'm confident he would have put more emphasis on the backup vocalists and accompanying musicians. Ron Wood holds it together pretty well but Kieth Richard needs to shake out the cob webs and stay on task. That might be a little unfair but I need more than they provide ... especially at whatever those tickets must have cost. The sound guy probably had his work cut out for him but we should probably see to it that he gets shot just to send a message.
4th ... interview footage: Mick Jaggar and Charlie Watts being interviewed while so obviously stoned was
hilarious. I'm laughing now thinking about that footage. Seeing Richards visibly shaken upon being informed that he was on some death watch list is very telling of a man who loves life. Ron Wood proves to be my favorite out of the bunch. I like his musical ability, his observations and his confidence.
Awe hell, let's give this a 4.5/5 stars but not for the music.
While typing this out I listened to
The Rolling Stones Hot Rocks 1964-1971. Whoever was responsible for keeping these guys from overdosing and recording in those days is a treasure.
Note: While I am far from a serious Stones fan I did appreciate that Jaggar is portrayed as taking the 'show' aspect of their concerts seriously and he works hard at providing a good one. Just because I personally don't like his show doesn't mean that it's any less of one.
5th ... my guess at a TLS rating: -7/5
