So, I finally sat down and watched House of 1000 Corpses followed by Devil's Rejects the other night. Per what I expected by searching Audiohoics, 1000 Corpses wasn't nearly as good as Devil's Rejects. However, watching Devil's Rejects without first watching 1000 Corpses I feel would have been a mistake. 1000 Corpses wasn't awful, and parts of it were downright funny or entertaining, it was just a little too crazy - redneck, inbred and entirely too much new age editing. It's like when people first learn to use Photoshop and go crazy with the filters. You can see Rob Zombie toned it down and learned a lot before making Devil's Rejects.

Where I think Rob Zombie goes right with both films is playing on the "creepy country" of America. Some of the middle of know where towns here are pretty disturbing in their own way. Take a movie like Hostel, which was mainly creepy because of its setting.

So, I'd recommend renting both... but if you start watching 1000 Corpses and get bored, which, is likely after the first 30-40min, just do the fast forward game to get the general idea of what happends and then pop in Devil's Rejects and enjoy.

I still have trouble watching "House." It's just a little too bloody and disturbing for me. However, I did enjoy "Rejects" and thought it was a huge step up. The same characters, which were just shallow and one-dimensional in "House" became interesting and entertaining in "Rejects." They had actually developed personalities and had a sense of humor. By the end of the movie I had come to "care" about them.

I still need to rent Zombie's version of "Halloween."

Don't bother, that movie COMPLETELY BLOWS!!! Nowhere near as good as the original.

I've only seen Halloween and House of 1,000 Corpses. I thought they both completely sucked. But I've heard quite a few peopld say Devil's Rejects is good. So maybe I'll give that one a shot.

Devil's is a great movie. I like all of Rob Zombies movies though. I really didn't think I was going to like Halloween, but I was pleased with the story. It didn't have the suspense of the original but none the less was still a good watch.

The first 10 minutes of corpses was inspired brilliance, after that it quickly degenerated into torture porn. Rejects was great up to the point where the guy exacting revenge on them was killed. To make those sick killers into heros or martyrs with a valiant death at the end really ruined the movie. If they would have let the ranger guy finish them off Zombie would have a classic. Instead he has a flop or near miss. Too bad. The part where he interrogated and then killed the mother and the scene with bad guys tied down in their chairs was awesome and had me cheering. To kill that guy off so easy was a dumb move and terrible writing.

Haven't seen the halloween remake and don't plan to. House of 1000 corpses started out ok, but then the next hour and a half was edited like a music video. It just became dizzying to watch.

Devils rejects was much better, but I think it still was overrated. Rob Zombie definately showed a lot of improvement as a film maker from his prior movie. I hate to say it because the man definately has talents, but I think his talents are better left as a story writer, makeup artist, musical scorer, and musician than as a director. He's really shined in those other areas.

I don't think you could get anything but campy, horror movie with a twist out of House of 1K Naked Ladies.....it's perfect, raw and silly. The Devils Rejects was a much more evolved movie compared to the first one, with some actual life in it, great cast of new and old + back story....much better production and the soundtrack was spot-on.

If you thought the ending of TDR "turned" the family into heros or martyr's? Seriously? The viewer process of liking the anti-hero, or antagonist of the movie is nothing new in cinema but come on. I believe it was clear that they died and were super crazy. The soundtrack was the balls.

Ever seen a old western? film noir? bad detective movie?

I had an issue with the way they died in such glorious fashion and going out on their own terms. They should have died at the hand of the marshal because that would have been justice served.

Should Deckers' girlfriend died onscreen, or was it better left unsaid and left to the viewers imagination as to the actual outcome?

I see your point of view, but it's the opposite of Rob Zombies from the beginning.

In horror movies, writers want you to be resistant at the beginning, but by the end lust for blood, even rooting for the killers. In Hostel, people are resisting the terror, led through the suspense of the beginning and then when the killing first starts, they are grossed out. By the end, (SPOILER ALERT DON'T READ MORE IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN/WANT TO SEE 'HOSTEL'), you are hoping the last remaining guy will savagely murder his captor. In the theater I was in, the crowd clapped at that last scene. I think this is along the same lines, Rob Zombie wants you to lust for their glorified and gresome demise.

Horror movies, in this respect, are the opposite if typical Western movie justice. I don't disagree that it could have been a cool alternate ending if they would have been brutally murdered by the law, in inhumaine ways.. maybe even making that same point of "The Departed" of 'what's the difference?' But, like dorokusai said, I think he wanted you to know that they were very, very, very crazy. So crazy, that, I don't think he expected people to relate with him. It's just more fun to cheer for them.

Yeah, I see what you are saying about Zombies films, but I just don't like movies that glorify the killers. In all the best horror films you are generally never rooting for the killer but rather rooting for one or two of the innocents to finally get rid of the killer. Traditional horror films follow a morality play and those are often the best ones with the most satisfying endings. I like over the top gore, I am a huge Fulci and Romero fan, but I don't like this trend of torture porn in so-called horror films because they are not horror films by any stretch of the imagination.

You don't need to tell me about westerns, because they are one of my favorite genres. http://www.audioholics.com/news/editorials/the-italian-western-and-the-american-western/ :D

That was my problem with American Gangster. I thought they didn't play into the evilness of Denzel's character enough. They made him out to be this great guy, while he kills some guy in the middle of the street. It just didn't make sense.

I preferred the character change and fictional drama in Training Day. AG was a Hollywood adaptation of real events.

I did also. It shows that in movies, sometimes the fictional stuff can be more realistic than their interpretation of the non-fiction.

I didn't really like 1000 Corpses, but it did have its moments. Haven't bothered to watch the others as a result.

Watch Rejects and turn it off right after the marshal catches up with them and ties them up in the house. That one scene is worth the entire movie and will have you cheering F$% yeah!!! even though I never use that kind of language;)

Devils Rejects is a lot better. It's worth watching. And, since you watched 1000, you'll see some of those characters come to life.
