Ripping CDs with...

l still have tubs of CDs to rip. I ripped quite a few in ALAC a long time ago and wondered what others have used and what pros and cons there are in other formats. I also found that some AVRs support say AIFF while other do not. Anybody swear by WAV? I may look into a reliable NAS soon as mine likes to disappear from the network from time to time. I'm not too proud to say that I still do not understand why my tracks play out of order. Hate it.

Even when I used iTunes (on a pc) I didn't rip to ALAC due the limited use of such. Then iTunes in transferring machines screwed up my ripped library so just gave up on iTunes altogether. Then came a knee injury a long time ago and a long ripping session with my CDs, I went with EAC (ExactAudioCopy.de) and save to FLAC format these days, even tho storage is relatively cheap, still saves space on drives for more music

I wouldn't call it wonderful. It's my own fault for using iTunes back then for everything. I remember reading something about DLNA not sorting tracks correctly but I can't remember why.

Not sure why DLNA in and of itself would change order of anything....sounds more like your drive management.

ps with EAC I use Foobar2000 for management....

A vote for using MediaMonkey to rip to FLAC, then convert to more portable formats, such as VBR 320 kbps MP3.

FLAC library organized by artist and album. MP3 organized only by artist to allow long random/shuffle playback of many songs.

Admittedly, I do not use, or have knowledge of, things Apple.

Another vote for EAC and Foobar2000 and FLAC format

For a Windows PC I use bBPower Amp for ripping to whatever digital format my little heart desires and MP3 TagEditor for bulk/single file embedded meta-data/artwork for all digital formats also, including WAV files.

I am 100% behind FLAC as the format. I used an old computer and installed a linux based OS called vortexbox which is super easy to install. You can configure it to autorip in FLAC and mp3 at the same time and will tag and download cover art for most popular artists. It is old now but still works well for this purpose. I use Roon for management and playback.

That is the beauty of EAC, it makes a bit perfect copy and compares that to a database for confidence. If it doesn't get a good read on the first pass, it will try again, and it has error correction capabilities.

At the end of the rip, it generates a report to let you know you got a bit perfect rip, or to let you know that errors occurred that could not be corrected, or to let you know that some tracks could not be verified as accurate.

And, EAC is free.

I RIP to AIFF as it's the same format as CD. This allows me to burn CD's without going thru any type of a compression scheme or play them in their original format. I use Audirvana for playback and music management. It supports AIFF over UPnP which maintains the music in its original format.

I rip to FLAC using EAC, as well. I use SONOS to organize and playback. Works well for me.

FWIW FLAC is a lossless compression routine and it still allows me to burn a complete cd without loss of information. I used to do that for my car cd player but these days just use a thumb drive.....

But you got a lot of good advice. Looks like flac and foobar is most popular here. I used to use foobar, it worked really well from what I can remember. I just gravitated to JRiver for some reason.

How do you handle metadata with .wav files (my understanding is .wav isn't nearly as metadata friendly as flac)?

You know, I heard that. But when I stream music to my Yamaha 3060, it displays the album art, the artist and the tracks with no problem.

Maybe that's part of your Jriver package....how about if you play it thru something else like on a thumb drive into your avr or optical disc player?
