Review my purchase (Paradigm's)

I just picked up on craigslist a mint condition set of:
Paradigm Mini Mk3
Paradigm CC-300

Price $190

I'm currently going to use them with Onkyo TX-SR605 (getting this tomorrow for $150) in a 3.1 setup in a small apartment home theater setup. I think it will be plenty of power and sound quality but I really went out on a whim as I've never really heard of these before. But the build quality seemed good and I really like the center channel. Additionally, the speakers came with 20" Paradigm Speaker stands:) I would have needed to purchase speaker stands separately so this was a huge bonus for me.
Attached are some photo's.

A good deal for $190 - and for Paradigm, the Mini MK speakers are nice ones.

I was always under the impression Paradigm's were overpriced, wannabe speakers but these seem very well built. I'm tempted to open up one of the MK3's and check it out. There seems to be white stuffing material almost coming out of the port. Is that normal?

Yes Paradigm, tends to put a lot of damping material inside of
their speakers. While I do prefer other speakers, Paradigm is
decent, and you can do a lot worse. The MK series is a step up
over the older Atom, and Titan speakers > with a better cabinet
and better crossover work.

Well if they don't sound as good as my AudioEngine A5's I'm going going to be pissy.

Congrats! That's a heck of a good deal and I'm sure you'll love the sound quality.

I've no idea why Paradigm gets so little love on this board. I think it might be for two reasons:

1) this board certainly tends to favor internet-direct companies and Paradigm has remained a dealer-only, store brand. Certainly, the internet-direct companies have moved the needle in terms of what sort of performance is expected at a given price point. That has eroded Paradigm's value in the eyes of a lot of people, and that is fair. It's a very tough market, the speaker world. That said, Paradigm is a North American company, trying to compete in the new retail landscape while sticking by their brick & mortar retail partners, and continuing to improve and refine their products. Personally, the Signature Series speakers are some of my favorite speakers out there, period. And I'm darn impressed with the new Monitor Series 7 lineup. They're very good speakers that I think compete well in their highly sought after price bracket.

2) Liking Paradigm is a bit "boring" :p They are the epitome of the "Canadian sound" that came from all the NRC research. Flat, transparent and uniform, their sound doesn't stand out in a show room or do anything to particularly grab your attention. They are in no way the "new hotness", so there's a bit of the unfortunate stigma that they just aren't "cool" because they're not a new, hip brand, and all of their designs are just tried and true, accurate, time tested models. You see? Boring :p

But the fact is, Paradigm's speakers almost always measure well. They sound very neutral and transparent. And they remain well built, well designed and a good value, IMO. They're good. I think you'll enjoy them. And you got them for a steal, so I think you have ever right to feel excited and I hope you get to enjoy them for many years to come!

Well I'm addicted to audio in some form or another. Will probably stay that way for some time. Thanks for the overview and detailed response. It keeps me coming back for more.
I figured for $190 I could at least live with them for a few months until I can pawn them off on someone else. Hopefully they pass the test when the WAF comes home from work.

I am not worried about that - they are voiced different than
the AudioEngine, and they are not voiced to tickle your ears.
They came before the home theater and gaming craze, and
will do OK for home theater - however, there is no danger of
waking up the sleeping ants.:)

Not bad at all. Paradigm makes very nice speakers.

Well, so what's the verdict? Are they better than AudioEngine? :D
Short answer. Yes.
However, my AudioEngine for lower volume levels sound better. I'm currently getting a little bit of background noise when in Ipod mode on the receiver. Overall, I'm happy with the performance. There are a few issues I still need to work out with the configuration and which mode actually sounds best on the receiver. Either way, I made a good purchase on the Paradigms.
The Paradigm CC-300 center channel is astoundingly beautiful sounding. Very very cool with home theater. And If I had the space I would track down some towers than can go down to 30-40 hz. I'm pretty sure I'd appreciate preamp outputs for the full 5.1 system as I'm not convinced these home theater receivers put out enough clean output to satisfy (currently have a Pioneer VSX-522-k that I picked up from best buy until I figure out what receiver I actually want, specs below)
I'm almost certain I'm not content with the clean power output of the receivers I can afford and will eventually want a dedicated amp for at least the three front speakers. I think at my preferred music listening and home theater movie volume will need 100 true rms per channel.
