Reveicer suddenly stopped

So I'm watching The Incredibles and all of a sudden my receiver clicks off.
I feel the top of the receiver , and it isn't warm at all. I then power it back on and it reads a message like "Check SP inputs" or something like that. I figure it's talking about speaker inputs. I also checked the manual and it reads that if the receiver suddenly stops playing it might be due to a speaker short circut.

I'm not really sure what happened. What I'm guessing is that I recently connected SR,SL,SC to the back of my receiver, and had them simply running behind the TV, not plugged in yet. I connected banaclips on all of these, and perhaps 2 of them touched during a "bassy" scene in the movie.

Will this cause any damage to the receiver? I have a Yamaha RX-V550.

Thanks!

I've experienced this with my Yamaha receiver several times when I hook speakers up. The bare speaker wire touches and the speaker short triggers the protection circuit. The circuit shuts down the amplifier before any damage can be done. It's a protection circuit and you shouldn't have any damage. I always check carefully, now, to make sure that speaker wires aren't touching.

I'm thinking it was the tip of two banana clips not connected to anything behind my TV... as I really don't have a lot of speaker wire bare except for those connecting to my 2 fronts and center. and those are set/clean connections.

Banana clips are just like bare wire.

You are correct. If the speaker wire is connected to the speaker inputs on your receiver, and the banana clip terminations accidently touch, it will be just like bare wire touching.

I use to have a sony that went into protection mode at random times and for no apparent reason. I can still see the look on my guests faces when everything went silent lol they thought something broke and looked at me right away to see how disappointed I would be.
