Retiring my 22 year old cassette deck

After careful consideration, a shrinking tape collection, and a lack of space for my center channel speaker in my bedroom system, I decided to retire my old Pioneer CT-S607R I bought when I was in high school. It seems as though Pioneer doesn't have the parts I need to restore the deck (new heads, rec level pot), so I figure I'll give it to my dad to see if he wants to use it in his basement. It's still in great shape for its age.

It was a hard decision to make. Anybody here have a hard time letting go of their old electronics? It's funny to be sentimental over something like that. It's like saying goodbye to an old friend.

I hear ya. That's why, despite trying to convince myself to give them away to strangers, I still have a lot of my old gear. The only way that I feel good about letting it go is doing what you mentioned - giving it to someone that can get some use out of it. After all...they're my babies.

Unfortunately I'm like that with almost everything.
I still have the same air compressor I got when I was 16 (still in use)
Can't seem to part with my two Porter Cable 12v drills from 1992 (even though the chargers are blown and ruined the batteries)
I still have my Realistic STA-78 receiver (22 watts) and Lab 300 turntable from 1978.

I have a garage full of old crap. A cassette player, turntable, speakers, recievers, tools that have been replaced, an ark welder, compressor, folding chairs, etc....

Yeah, I feel your pain.

I bought the deck from Crutchfield for around $300 in 1990. A midlevel deck that sounded really good. It costed more than the receiver I had at the time. I used it so much up through probably 2002 that the heads are quite worn. It hasn't had much use since then due to the degraded sound quality. It's really a shame I can't get the parts for it that I need. I should've done it a few years ago when I had the chance and the parts were still available. I bought a used Sony 3-head deck back in 2006 with low usage as my primary deck, which doesn't get much use either. It has better sound quality, but nothing will replace my old Pioneer for nostalgia.

I know what your going through, I had a Nakamichi ZX-9 Cassette Deck that I ended up selling on ebay for $400.00

Take it up to Goodwill and write the estimated value off this years taxes. Those guys will take pretty much anything, and try to fix it - if they can't it'll go to recycling. We've written off a bunch of old consumer electronics from both the office and home in the last 3 years. In fact, I just donated a bag full of old portables stuff last week.

I had a Realistic integrated am pushing 25 Watts/per and it had real wooden sides....and ALL discrete components inside. No ICs at all. It began to malfunction and blew the tweetr out of one of PSBs. That was enough for me to throw it in the garbage.
