So basically, I have a huge range in tastes of music. Recently however, I've heard some things that just reminded me of the elusive Idon'tknowwhat.

I know, I'm talking nonsense, but I was hoping maybe some of you can provide some ideas for the material I have in mind.

I'm not sure how to describe this particular genre, and yet I'm sure it'll come to mind as soon as someone mentions it.

For example, think Moon River - by Henry Mancini, or perhaps many of the scenes in the movie Meet Joe Black.

Another genre I can't seem to quite place is something from the era of the 1920's or 30's I'm guessing. It has a type of jazz feel to it. For you Star Trek buff's, think of some of those time traveling episodes in DS9. It's the sort of classy table top music of that era.

Anyways, if any of you can help refine my vague intuitions here I'd be greatly appreciative.

Okay, I'll play. My 3 guesses are Swing, Big Band and Dixie. The first 2 guesses are inspired by a music channel provided by my cable provider and the last 1 is inspired by a brief visit to New Orleans a really long time ago. How'd I do?

I think of Moon River as fitting in the Crooner genre. I also think of the 1920's jazz type music as falling in the Flapper genre, although I don't know if that genre is entirely applicable to music.
