Repurposing a klipsch cs-500

So last year I finally retired my klipsch CS-500 and replaced the reciever w/ the Marantz 1509. The cs500 had a passive sub, so that had to be upgraded to powered, and added a center channel. Will probably add surrounds at some point, but that’s not really the issue...

I took the cs500 (for those that are unfamiliar, it’s a 2.1 reciever kit that came with speakers and sub) and put it in the basement, connected it to a phono preamp, and put it in the no longer used TV cabinet with my record player to make a dedicated vinyl cabinet. Here’s the thing... When it was all in my 12x15 den, the passive sub was adequate (if not super impressive), but in the 30x60some basement, it disappears. Is there a way to connect a powered sub with some more punch to the reciever instead, or do I need a reciever specifically made for one? Is there an add-on that will convert the signal from the reciever (i guess un-amplify it) so that it can be amplified by the sub?

Extra credit queston: the lcd display on the old reciever is incredibly dim and the remote barely works (at one point I tracked down a new remote only to find out that it isn’t the remote) and from what I’ve been able to gather, both problems are likely linked to a bad capacitor somewhere inside. How would I go about fixing that?

I realize i’m probably doing everything the hard way, and if junking it and starting over is the way to go, I’ll probably just do that, but I’m a tinkerer, so if there is a way to cobble together old stuff to work well, I’d like to do it.

Some subs come with speaker-level inputs as well as the standard RCA inputs. Get one and you’ll be in business.
