Reprogrammed both my Logitech Harmony 650 remotes

I had a paradigm shift after purchasing my 2nd Harmony 650 remote and having programmed by Samsung tablet's remote app. Armed with this paradigm shift and feedback from my family (mostly complaints :p ) I decided to clean up the programming.

  1. I went through all the devices and removed all unnecessary commands from the screens. These unnecessary commands were tested against their respective devices to what their action was if the command seemed a bit vague.
  2. I went through each activity and cleaned up the steps required to bring the system to its correct inputs.
  3. I included all the relevant commands from all the devices into each activity so no one has to switch out of the activity to the device to access these commands. They are now included with the activity. This way, if someone chooses an activity and waved the remote during the turn on process, all one needs to do is to press the inputs assigned to the command. (I may revisit and add the power buttons too)
  4. I rearranged the screens to be consistent across all activities keeping the command order the same as much as possible across all screens for all activities.

I like the 650. I replaced the far more expensive Harmony Touch with one in order to get away from the touch screen and have real buttons. My wife hated the Touch. It is one of the great values in home audio.

I didn't know this until recently but Logitech purchased "Harmony" which was a Canadian company. Logitech was smart and didn't gut the organization but kept it together. It shows from both a product and product support perspective which is top notch.

Have you set up favorite channels for your cable / broadcast TV activity? There are some nice channel icons you can apply to your favorites at http://www.iconharmony.com/ as long as you're in a tweaking mood.

I was starting to set up favorites but I was googling for the icons. I will have to investigate this site out. Thanks for the tip. :)

My daughter tried using the remote via an activity and managed to flub it up. o_O So once she was finished with the system, I took the remote and added a few more commands to make it goof proof like adding power commands and input select command used by the devices in their respective activities. That way, if they wave the "wand" around, all they need to do is press the power and input buttons to get the acitivity correct.

Logitech bought Harmony in ~2005, IIRC and before that sale, calling for support was great- most of the time, the calls were answered by two of the three original employees- one of whom built the first 5000 pieces and they REALLY knew how those models worked. The original Harmony could never have brought out so many new models in such a short time and unfortunately, communication has taken a back seat to putting out new models. They offered remotes that promised things that turned out to be impossible and made life very difficult for people to sell these with any idea that problems wouldn't arise (and bite us on the butt). Then, they killed most of their models and it looked like they were going to pull the plug on Harmony at least, temporarily. My fear for a long time has been: if they pull the plug and kill the whole thing, updates will be impossible because the database and servers are the only way to program these, unlike URC, RTI and several others that put the software and codes on the computer and it's possible to convert to/from Hexidecimal, so codes from other people and databases can be imported without the company being involved.

I never stopped using them, just put up with the BS because it was a good way to get this done without the need to put up with URC/RTI/Universal Electronics/Nevo and other PITA programming. I'm not dumping on your choice- I'm just letting you know that it hasn't been all rainbows and unicorns.

NOTE- When the user doesn't aim the remote toward the equipment and some of the commands don't operate something, you should be able to use the Help button- that's why it's there. Also, you can set the power commands to leave the equipment on when changing from one activity to the others, which allows pressing the activity button again- if the command are discrete, it will cause no problems but if the activity includes what Harmony calls a 'sequence', it will send the added commands that cause the input to scroll, delays, etc.

One of the reasons they set up the buttons and commands the way they do is due to the fact that most people don't like to wade through a few pages of optional buttons, which takes them away from what they're watching or listening to.

One of the things I like most about these is that it is so easy to add buttons to the activities and in the case of the H1000 (which had major problems), I did things with these remotes that Harmony's tech support people told me "That won't work". They worked great and then, after spending a lot of time getting it to work the way I wanted, they discontinued that model and the replacement was incompatible with the old software, so I had to start over for those systems. They did, however, add button locations and functions that made the new one a great alternative.

I still use the 650 and now, they changed the software so I can't organize the 50+ accounts I have for my customers but with the new software, comes the ability to use more devices, so it's not all bad (but it will end up wasting a lot of time for people who used the dealer site). It's a really good low-cost remote that works well. FYI- if the screen starts going dark and it reboots intermittently, change the batteries.

As an end user of their products starting back 10 years ago, I have to say that their support is pretty dammed good, much better in fact than Samsung and the support of their Android tablets. You as aperson selling and supporting them would know more than I. I'm just relating my experience with them. It has been nothing but positive. :)

Right- my perspective comes as a dealer, but I have used their remotes as an end user, too. However, from the standpoint of glitches and hangups, I can be more or less tolerant but it depends on what's going wrong. I have had more problems with URC remotes than Harmony and while URC tells us that they have the most complete database because they're an OEM manufacturer of remote controls, it's Harmony that has a more extensive database and in fact, I have learned commands while on the phone with Harmony Tech Support and found that the code had errors, WHILE THE CALL WAS STILL HAPPENING. That differs wildly from the time I asked the URC guy if he wanted me to e-mail the setup file so he could look at it and he said, "I don't know what good that would do". I almost tried to crawl through the phone to strangle him.
