Replacing Yamaha RX-V2500

I recently bought a Panasonic BD35 Blu-Ray player and am thinking about buying another receiver. I currently have a Yamaha RX-V2500 (no HDMI or DD TrueHD or DTS MA). It outputs 130w/ch. It is powering a pair of Polk Audio RTi10's, pair of Polk Audio RTiA1's, and a Polk Audio CSi5. There is also an Epik Knight sub (a beast) with the speakers crossed over at 80 hz.

I'm looking at the following receivers and would like to know how they stack up to the one I currently have. I don't want to give up any sound quality. It must also be able to run the RTi10's without a problem.

HK 354
Onkyo 806
Onkyo 706
Onkyo 876
Pioneer 1018AH
Pioneer 01TXH
Pioneer 91TXH

Thanks for any comments or advice.

concerns

I have two concerns.

1) You don't include Yamaha on your list.

2) You are going down the food chain instead of up.

I agree with Z on this one. The 2500 is a beast and you are looking at bunnies. Look at the Yamaha 3900, Denon 3808 or Pioneer Elite SC 05.

-SC O5.:( Judging by the few statements from Gene in the Z7 thread about the SC 07, I wouldn't put PIO in with the others.

Find the best deal on the 3900, or the 3808.

My fault, I haven't read much about the SC 05, just had a little one on one time with it but not enough to really judge.

The RX-V2600 on up is a completely different and IMPROVED design on all fronts, from the pre-amp sections to the video switching/upscale systems. Now, the ones after 2600 still have the same audio section as far as I know, but they have even further upgraded video systems and related audio capabilities with HDMI. Seems unfair that you are not including Yamaha in the list. Did you some problems with Yamaha gear in the past?

math wiz, the 876 is something special for video purposes. You also get Audyssey XT. Decent amp, but I have no idea how it compares with your old one.

You can adjust picture with ISF controls on every source input. Not only can you adjust per source input, you can adjust any source to multiple input settings for serious video flexibility. For instance, say you have only one disc player, or even say for your STB, you could apply EE to your standard def, and leave the hi-def untouched. Pretty neat.

Would the RX-V1800 be an option since its being replaced and could be had for a substantial discount. It also has advanced dynamic range control for night time mode as well as advanced DSP control for the nights as well.

I am having similar thoughts. I love my Yamaha but wonder if I am missing something by not having the newer features.

I am building a new house and we are going to move there around the 1st of February. I had thought I was going with the Samsung 650 series DLP or LCD but I think I have changed my mind due to a few things. I figure I will go with the Panasonic Viera TH-50PZ85u, save a few bucks and then I can upgrade my Denon 2910 HDMI DVD player to a new Panasonic DMP-BD55 with the extra savings. Now comes the hard part, I think I am going to have to go from a 7.1 system to a 5.1 system because the viewing area has an open back wall. I just don't want to try to rig the back surrounds to the ceiling. Right now I have a Yamaha RX-V2500 receiver that has served me well but I see all these features that with HD surround and a new form of DTS on the new receivers. So my question is " Am I missing anything with my old Yamaha ?" " I mean is it like I am really missing out on something that would make my system sound better by a considerable amount ? If you think I am, what receiver would you recommend under $500 ? Should I go 5.1 instead of 7.1 ?

I love having my Home Theater but its really not the top of the line its more of a bang for the buck system. I run Athena Audition front and center and Micras for my surrounds, and have the SVS 20-39 PC+ for my sub. If I am not missing out on some sound quality that is significant I would probably just stay with my Yamaha but if I am missing out on a lot then I would sale the Yamaha and get a new receiver.

Any input will be appreciated.

The only thing you're missing is HDMI and a receiver with the ability to decode the HD audio formats.
The BD55 will decode these for you and you can feed the audio thru the Analog inputs of the 2500, at the expense of the receiver's bass management which is far superior to that of the Panasonic player.
That being said the new audio formats alone, IMO, are not worth upgrading a receiver for.
If you are looking for new receiver, it's hard to find one that doesn't do HD audio. By doing so you could save $100 and get the Panny BD35.

My 2 cents

Thanks Nomo. That's what I was wanting to hear. With all the other expenses I would just as soon keep the Yamaha a couple more years. I am already upgrading the Hitachi 51 Rear Projection TV and the DVD player so I really don't have the money to upgrade the receiver to a quality receiver that I would normally ( something in the $1,000 range). Sounds like I will be fine for the time being. Much appreciated.

What thread are you talking about? I am interested in the Pioneer SC 05, so I would like to gather all the information possible.
