Replacing subwoofer cone

I have a Onkyo SKW-391 subwoofer that came with my HTIB I bought off second hand a year ago. About 9 months ago, the subwoofer began to make a loud boom sound. Since a lot of places will charge you money just to take a look at it and I found the same exact sub on ebay for $30, I bought a replacement. The old one has been sitting around in my room. Now, I'm starting to wonder, could I just get a new cone and rewire said cone and put it in the subwoofer box? And if so, would I need to shop based on the specs of the cone? thanks.
