hey guys

im hoping that someone will be able to help me out...

i have a pair of Jamo CBR 905's that i am wanting to repair by replacing the woofers, one of which is badly damaged.
my only problem is that after Jamo will not answer any of my communications and all the info i have about these units is 8" and 8 Ohms!

any advice would be greatly received.

What is "badly damaged"? If it's just the cone, or even the voice coil, it can be repaired. This is not expensive, and is a far better idea than trying to replace the driver with something that you're unsure of.

Other ideas would be to ask the manufacturer who they sourced the speaker from.

A good hifi repair shop will likely be able to identify the speaker and order a replacement.

thanx Az B

its just the cone...

i spoke to Jamo today and they were extremaly unhelpful, apparently others have experienced the same. They did give me the number of a company called Avontech(?) 01789 263506 but i was unble to get thru to them and could find no info at all the company.

will i need to replace the crossover if i install drivers of a slightly different spec?

Why not just repair the cone? It should cost about 30-50 GBP, probably less than a new driver, and then you don't have any worries about matching crossovers and the like. Do you have a repair shop nearby? If not a hifi shop, you can try a professional sound shop. They can repair cones as well as anyone, and they might even be cheaper. (Audiophiles tend to have more money than musicians)

Send a Pic

Can you send a pic of the driver front and back...Darren K at Parts Express could most likely identify it and let you know where to get it.

I ran into a similar problem a while back when a friend of mine gave me a pair of 8" Bose drivers he had taken out of their enclosures long ago.

When I tried to contact Bose to find out the specs on the speakers so I could build a proper box, they told me "no." When I asked them to just tell me the volume of the box the speakers needed, they said "no." Their explanation was that they pride themselves on their speakers designs and discourage anybody from tinkering with their drivers and giving misrepresenting their company.

In the end, I threw the Bose speakers in the trash.

If one really wants to determine the specs on a blank box speaker, there are methods of testing that will allow you to get the parameters. But it's a pain in the butt to do so, and without them you can't readily replace a driver in a speaker without a high likelihood of botching up the whole sound by mis-matching the box AND crossover.

Good luck!

Good riddence- you found the ideal spot for them! :D After all, once you built a decent enclosure, you'd have had to replace the subpar driver.
