Replacement subwoofer for Harman Kardon AVR-135

Question for you guys. My wife and I just purchased a 10 year old house that had surround sound speakers already hard wired into the house professionally. They are Sony speakers and I figured they probably worked. I came to work yesterday and we were cleaning out some storage and they were going to throw away a HK AVR-135....so I took it instead. Hooked it up at home and presto, the speakers work and it's working w/ my TV! Sounds great also!

The bummer was the subwoofer is shot. I tried to fix this awful popping come out of it and instead the center card on the board fried and started smoking. So that needs to be replaced and I need suggestions.

My wife and I watch a decent amount of movies, and LOVE music. Where do you guys suggest I go with this system? As of right now, I have exactly $0 invested in it....or you could say that I have $245,000 wall mounted speakers ha!

The receiver has pre outs, so you can pick any powered sub you want.

That receiver is old an not compatible with current equipment like TVs BD players and streaming devices. Actually that receiver does need recycling.

I like the frankness! lol

That being said, this receiver is going to have to get me by until next month at a minimum. I might as well start soliciting recommendations for receivers as well.

Your sub selection process begins with your budget and the size of the room it's going in.

As far as the receiver, do you like the volume you are getting with it? The 135 puts out 40 watts per channel, so if you don't think you need a lot more power then you can shop for features other than wattage and not spend a ton.

The room is roughly 20ft wide by ~13 feet deep. The rear left corner is open to the kitchen area for what its worth.

As for the sound, I have not had the chance to really try it out. I just got things set up yesterday evening. I want good sound without a doubt, so I can put on whatever I choose, Rock, Classic Rock, and it be loud yet still clear w/out being obtrusive (the speakers). That being said I do not want to spend ~2k on it right now. We have bigger fish to fry w/ the house and this is a side hustle if you will.

After looking up some stuff, it seems this brand is cited a decent amount on this forum. Thoughts? I cannot post a link unfortunately as I do not have enough posts yet.

The Dayton SUB series is good bang for the buck. I'd go for as large as you can fit and the SUB1500 doesn't cost a heck of a lot more....

Thank you.

Follow on question for that. What kind of sound quality at higher volumes will I get out of that SUB1500? When I am blasting Led Zep, or some Classical, or even Sturgill Simpson?

I plan on linking this system eventually with some speakers wirelessly in another room in the next year if that makes sense.

Not sure what you mean by sound quality at higher volumes particularly. It is a budget sub so don't expect miracles in terms of super low distortion or super high output; higher quality subs will cost more. Plus what the sub gets is limited by where you cross with your speakers and the content in that frequency range in the music. The sound quality should be fine, though.

Had to look up Sturgill Simpson....not a country fan myself.

Some of the current avrs like Denon/Marantz' HEOS feature, are more suited to incorporating wireless speaker setups.

Fair enough. Keep in mind, I am a total noob when it comes to this stuff. I have found that this is much like drinking from a fire hose.

Sturgill Simpson is awesome. I like all of his albums a lot. I can go from Zep to Bach to Sturgill and I often have. :) I like most genres of music. :)

Welcome to AH.
To add to the sub answer above, besides content in the source for low frequency, the recorded level also matters for reproduction. Otherwise you will be resetting the sub volume endlessly. Once the system is level matched properly, then you should be set and if not loud enough on the low end, blame the recording.
