Replacement speaker grill cloth, what's the best?

Was playing around with my hulking "classic" circa 1990 Technics speakers. Decided to see how they sound without the speaker grills. I like them that way a lot, much more clear without that thick black cloth in front. But I have DAWGS. Naughty dawgs, one specifially. So I can't leave them wide open and unprotected.

Sure I could let upgrade-itis wash over me and find myself penniless with a big new 7.1 speaker setup, but I like my "techies" and they are in great shape, like the day I got them home and set them up.

Sooooo am considering replacing the speaker cloth, but want something as transparent both "acousitically" to really let the sound through, and esthetically, to show off those big old woofers and that huge horn (?) port.
So far, my internet searches have only turned up what appears to pretty much be the same type of cloth, and that's what I want to avoid is cloth that makes them sound muffled.

Any ideas? Thanks !

uh .... been there done that.

I reckon a better question may have been will most any sturdy, attractive and somewhat visually transparent cloth do or would you have to use speaker cloth? Is is really that special as far as acoustics go?

No really. I'd use a very low thread count cloth mad out of cotton or stretchy type material.

I constructed some speakers as 'rears', quite some time ago. So long ago that I've forgotten what drivers I put in them.

Anyway, I also constructed the grills as well, and covered them with some wire mesh from a big hardware store. The mesh is about a quarter inch square. I sprayed it with black auto paint.
Looks pretty good and doesn't seem to vibrate with the music (I thought it might)

Just a thought. :)
