What would a more expensive reciever offer that the Pioneer 1016 doesnt have?
I had an itch to upgrade to a Sony 5200 for the GUI or the Pioneer 84 just cuz. Maybe for just the braggin rights.
I dont need HDMI switching or video conversion and 100w/ch x7 is plenty.

Im not sure theres enough there in another receiver to merit $700 more out of pocket

Do you have any thoughts to offer?
thanks!

Receivers

You don't need more power, and you are not concerned about video features, it sounds like you have already convinced yourself not to upgrade.
If you want more power down the road, just add an outboard amp to your Pioneer. Also, If you save your $700 for a year or two, you will be able to get a receiver with HDMI 1.3 and decoding of the new HD audio formats.

yea.. I guess I have convinced myself to keep it. I been looking at the new ones and really the only think I get to benefit me is a better auto setup/equalization. So I think Ill keep this one while the 1080p technology catches up and then spring on a new one in a couple years. thanks!

Setup and calibration

If you want to calibrate your setup, buy a radio shack SPL meter and calibration DVD. The auto setup on most receivers is good for setting distances and levels, but you can do this with the meter. The EQ functions are pretty worthless except for the high end denon models with Audessy.

Room acoustic issues can also be addresed with room treatments and furnishings.

Apparently you've never tried Pioneer's advanced multi channel acoustic calibration

No USB playback

I am disappointed that I couldn't use the VSX-1016's USB playback function - one of the main reasons I bought it. I tried to connect a USB hard disk, nothing. My iRiver H340 MP3 player, nothing. A 1Gb USB stick, nothing. An MP3 player with flash memory, nothing.

The AV seems to scan the external device's contents for 1 minute or so, because their LED blinks, but then no playback and no error message.

Have you tried anything that worked?

Hey, in my opinion, from everything that you mentioned, you definitely should replace your VSX1016 with VSX1015. I have it and its a wonderfull receiver. Definitely better looking. No DMHI(which you dont need), and looks exactly like the Elite 84. It has all the toys you get with the Elite (less the price) which is a good thing. IT also has Upconversion, which means one cable from receiver to tv - awesome for the wife factor. I ran a 7.1 setup and i never could listen at reference level (too loud). Thats the best bet.
