Repetitive Questions

I KNOW this topic has been brought up like a thousand times, but I still don't understand why there isn't just a stickied post at the top of each forum recommending like the top 3 receivers/speakers/whatever for different price ranges. Can someone please explain to me why Audioholics has refrained from doing this? I know Audioholics is meant to be a research tool instead of just blindly recommending certain products, but the questions still get asked, and the people still get answers. Couldn't some clauses just be added in the stickied post -- "these receivers are simply some audioholics favorites, there is no replacement for personal knowledge and research to determine what receiver best suits your needs." or something along those lines. Or avoid that altogether, and just create a poll and ask the members for their favorites. Probably multiple polls actually to split up the price ranges.

Sorry for beating a dead subject, but it's just one of those days where the little things get to you. I think it's because the snow has melted and there was about 50 lbs of dog poop to pick up in the back yard. I guess dog poop can be my next steam vent thread.

The Audioholics recommendations are on the main page. I think people post the questions because they are interested if anyone owns the gear they're after/considering. I've done plenty of posts replying to these sorts of questions because I've not got anything better to do!

That's an interesting avatar you've got, Hanse18.

I don't have a problem with repeat posts unless there are multiple posts asking the same questions in a single day. I don't see that on this forum.

A couple stickies linking to the recomendations on the main page would probably be a good idea. Some people don't even look at the main page.

What really irked me is someone asking about Axiom Audio and not knowing who they are. That is just plain lazy. As I type this theres an Axiom ad going on up top.

I guess I'm just not as easily annoyed. Those posts don't bug me at all. There are many people that don't have a clue about home theater and want to get into it. Many people aren't that good with computers. Many people don't even think about the search function. Instead of picking on them and replying in a sarcastic tone, why not tell them what they want to know or politely link to another thread or article that has the information. Also, on the topic of ads, some people, like me, have adblockers and do not see those ads.

The very first forum I ever joined, PCmech, has a lot of repeat posts. One of the best qualities of that forum is that respectful treatment is required and "noobs" are not looked down upon. The whole point of that forum is to help people learn about PC's. Is the Audioholics forum not here to help people learn about audio?

Don't get me wrong, I love this forum and I am not saying the people here aren't nice. I like it much more than AVS where respect is not common for noobs. However, I see more contempt for the noobs here then over at PCmech.

As you guys said, I don't have a problem with people coming in here asking questions about specific products. It's nice to have some reassurance about some product you are planning on buying. Specifically in receivers though, there are way too many posts asking someone else to spend their money. I suppose this thread should be focused on complaining about that specific kind of person, that does no research of their own to get even a vague idea as to brands they might look for. Kind of like what sheep said about axiom... within 10 minutes on any AV internet forum you should be able to find axiom, and people should at least TRY to do some basic research before they ask their questions. Does that make sense? I mean, I have asked my fair share of questions about AV stuff and computer stuff, but I figured out how to do both (home theater and computers) mostly on my own just by being a forum lurker, and using google. And I usually suck at learning things...

Now, since I don't want to start another rant thread on the same day, I'm just gonna flat out pirate my own thread and ask if this is not among the most rediculous scams you have ever seen:

http://cgi.ebay.com/CONVERT-ANY-TV-TO-PROJECTION-BIG-SCREEN-150-THEATRE_W0QQitemZ5877710579QQcategoryZ3320QQcmdZViewItem

Perhaps the concept isn't all that silly, but I just love the advertising. "It's our secret plans that make our product better than the rest." ... well yeah, no one is buying this so I guess they are still secret...

Not to mention the typos. I hope there aren't people who actually fall into this sort of trap. It says "using only our lens, secret plans, and products you probably have laying around your home." It doesn't even mention what materials I will actually need. Kinda fishy...

Anyone have the technical knowledge to prove how dumb this thing really is?

Yes, that does make sense. However, some people simply don't think of doing that. They see a forum and think, "Oh, I'll just ask here and get an answer". I have been guilty of this myself in some not-so-friendly forums. I learned the hard way. :)

About that Ebay thing, it is a complete scam. I can't imagine that one would be able to get a watchable 150" image with a standard CRT or LCD display. They simply aren't bright enough!

I need to know!!!

The repetive post bother me also. It would be great if someone could clear up if I should get a Yam 2500 or Den 3805. I've read the other 3425 threads on the subject but it's still not totally clear.

TIA,
Ironlung

...neither, of course. Get Bose, duh. They don't use a conventional receiver - speaker setup, so you don't need to worry about comparing them to anything else, so of course they are the best. I'm surprised you didn't know that...

These type of posts bother me less than two other type posts:

1) The "what's the best..." I just don't know where to start on these. Generally, a request for a price range follows.

2) "I just got this and don't know how to hook it up" with no specific problem mentioned. My first response is to ask if they checked their manuals.

2a) The simply put "I just got a ..." with a list of components. No questions. It's implied that they want hookup instructions and we're supposed to comply. I generally reply with "congratulations, good stuff" and leave it at that..

Hi SheepStar,

I was just busting on MarkW. But it's good to see that people here have just as sick a sense of humor as I do.

Thanks

I know, I just never get to say that, so when given the opportunity, I jump on it. :D

First class stamp, an envelope and mail the rest of the money to me. I can buy some crackers to go with my morning tea.
